Kingfish down Cyclones, 5-4 in Shootout

Joe Guenther tallied the only goal in the shootout as Brian Leitza made 41 saves in the 5-4 shootout win for the Kingfish.

For just the sixth time this season, the Kingfish tallied the first goal of the contest, as Marquis Mathieu slipped past the Cincinnati defense and beat Marc Kielkucki through the legs. Jason Norrie picked up an assist as he fed Mathieu in the slot at the 4:27 mark of the period.

Cincinnati tied the contest on its first power play four minutes later. Evan Cheverie took a rink wide pass from Mike Casselman and blew it by an out of position Brian Leitza to tie the game at one. Matt Noga also added an assist on the goal.

Ryan Gaucher gave the Cyclones the lead at the 16:02 mark of the period as he picked up a loose puck in the high slot, slipped past the pile of players in front of the Kingfish net and pushed the puck past Leitza on the power play. Brent Twordik added an assist on the goal, while Casselman added his second assist of the night on the goal.

The Kingfish tied the contest up at two on the power play just six minutes into the second period as Mike Kiesman as he pushed the puck off of Kielkucki's shoulder and into the back of the net. Jason Norrie added an assist on the goal.

Joe Guenther regained the lead for the Kingfish at the 11:32 mark of the second as he picked up a loose puck in the slot and flipped it over an outstretched Kielkucki. Bryan Richardson and Trevor Demmans added the assists on the Kingfish's second power play goal of the night.

Cincinnati tied the contest before the end of the period as Cardarella threw the puck into an empty net as Leitza came out of his net to play the puck. Casselman and Wes Blevins added the assists on the goal at the 18:33 mark of the second stanza.

The Kingfish took the lead at the midway mark of the third period as Sean Peach fired a bad angle slapshot over the catching glove of Kielkucki. Demmans and Richardson added the assists.

Cincinnati tied the contest at the 17:10 mark of the period and sent it to overtime as Leitza got caught out of his net as Cheverie pushed the puck into the open cage. Twordik and Casselman added the assists on the Cyclones's goal.

The overtime did not produce a winner as Joe Guenther was the only scorer in the shootout. Brian Leitza made 31 saves in the win and stopped all five Cincinnati shooters in the shootout.

The Kingfish continue their seven game road trip Friday and Saturday in Peoria to battle the Rivermen at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Toledo for an afternoon game on Sunday. Catch all the action on Baton Rouge's Best R & B, 104.5 WZRB beginning with the Kingfish pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
