Nailers Take Down Jackals for 4-0-1 Road Trip
November 29, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
ELMIRA, NY- After winning just ten games on the road in 2012-13, the Wheeling Nailers of 2013-14 are enjoying some of their best road success in recent memory. On Friday night, Sahir Gill's two points and Mike Condon's 34 saves propelled Wheeling to a 4-0-1 road trip, as the visitors defeated the Elmira Jackals, 3-1 at First Arena. The Nailers are 6-1-1 in their last eight road contests, after starting the year 0-2-1.
For the third straight game, the Nailers opened the scoring, needing just 3:26 to complete the task. Chaz Johnson kept the play alive at the right point, tossing the puck down the side wall for Sahir Gill along the goal line. Gill quickly found Anton Zlobin, who snapped home a shot from the right circle. Midway through the first period, Wheeling extended the lead. Colin Mulvey jammed the puck to Tyler Fernandez, who sent a turnaround shot into the left side of the cage. Myles Harvey also assisted on the marker, recording his first professional point.
With 7:42 remaining in the second period, the Jackals broke through for their lone goal of the night. Marvin Degon took a shot from the right point that was padded away by Mike Condon. However, the rebound kicked out to Rob Bellamy, who deposited it into the net from the left circle. The goal ended Condon's shutout streak at 127:14.
Early in the third period, Wheeling squashed any hopes of an Elmira comeback, regaining its two-goal lead at the 3:04 mark. Scott Zurevinski sent the puck in from the right wall, where it was deflected into the net by Gill. Mike Ratchuk also grabbed an assist, as the Nailers carried the 3-1 score into the win column, completing their five-game road trip with a 4-0-1 mark. Wheeling is now 7-0-1 in its last eight games, and 9-2-2 in its last 13.
Mike Condon shined once again for the Nailers, stopping 34 of the 35 shots he faced in goal. Scott Greenham took the loss for the Jackals, making 21 saves on 24 shots.
The Nailers begin a nine-game homestand on Saturday, when they take on the Toledo Walleye at 7:00.
