Last Leg of the Trip
The Wheeling Nailers will close out their five-game road trip on Friday night, when they visit the Elmira Jackals at First Arena. Thus far, the Nailers have had great success on their road trip, winning their last three games, while posting a 3-0-1 record against Reading, Fort Wayne, and Cincinnati. On the offensive side, forwards Zack Torquato and Max MacKay have at least one point in all four games, as Torquato currently owns a six-game point streak, while MacKay's stands at five. Mike Condon has started all four games in goal, and is coming off of a 38-save shutout in Cincinnati on Sunday. Wheeling is 5-4-2 on the road this season, after winning just ten games outside of the Ohio Valley last year.
A Reversal of Fortune
While the Nailers have enjoyed their November, going 8-3-2 in their first 14 games, the Jackals will be looking forward to turning the page on a new month. After starting the season with a 2-2-0 record, Elmira has won just two of its last 11 games, falling into third place in the Atlantic Division and 13th place in the Eastern Conference. On the flip side, the Jackals have earned at least one point in three of their last four games, as they went 1-1-1 in three home games last weekend against Kalamazoo, before being defeated in a shootout by Reading on Wednesday.
A Scoring Champ in the Mix
On Thursday, the Nailers were thankful for the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, who assigned forward Ben Duffy to Wheeling. Duffy had two assists in 13 games during his rookie campaign, but is coming off of an extremely successful junior career with the QMJHL's PEI Rocket. In 334 career games with the Rocket, Duffy tallied 139 goals, 202 assists, and 341 points. Last season, the Lower Sackville, NS native put an exclamation point on his junior career, edging out third overall draft pick Jonathan Drouin by five points for the league's scoring title, as he led the way with 110 points.
Looking for a High Five
Friday night's tilt marks the fifth of 15 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals, as well as the second at First Arena. Wheeling has won each of the first four games in the season series, including a three-game sweep from November 14th-16th. All three games at WesBanco Arena have been decided by one goal, while the lone contest at First Arena was significantly more lopsided, as the Nailers lit the lamp five times in a row, for a 5-1 triumph. Chaz Johnson had a hat trick in that game, which was Wheeling's ninth win in 31 games at Elmira all-time. The Jackals have outshot Wheeling in all four clashes.
Deadliest Killers
In their two-game series against the Cincinnati Cyclones, Wheeling's penalty kill was completely dominant, as the Cyclones were held off of the scoreboard on all 13 of their power play opportunities. The Nailers also netted a shorthanded goal, as their penalty kill now ranks first in the ECHL, at 91.9%. Wheeling's power play has jumped to 18th in the league, thanks to markers in back-to-back games, and on Friday, the Nailers will take on Elmira, who they have scored on the power play against in three of their four head-to-head meetings. The Jackals rank 15th on the power play and 21st on the penalty kill.
