Gwinnett Edged out by Evansville, 2-1 in the Shootout

DULUTH, Ga. - Josh Currie gave his team new life late in the third period with histhird goal of the season, but the Gwinnett Gladiators couldn't finish the job as they lost in only their second shootout game of the season, 2-1 to the Evansville IceMen Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
With their backs against the wall in the third, Gwinnett (6-12-0-1) stormed out for 15 shots in the final frame to Evansville's (9-4-0-3) five. Currie pushed a rebound under Evansville goalie Garrett Bartus after the puck shot off his left pad to tie the game at 17:48 of the third, with assists from Joey Haddad and Mike Embach. Bartus saved 33 of 34 in the win, while Louis Domingue saved 31 on 32, a night after posting a 40-save shutout against the IceMen.
In the five-minute overtime period, the IceMen outshot the Gladiators 3-0, and then scored twice on four shootout opportunities, while Gwinnett was unable to cash in on their four chances. Jeremy Langlois and Daulten Leveille scored in the shootout for Evansville.
Both teams go head-tohead again on Sunday afternoon, at 2:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
After another quiet first period that was mostly controlled by the Gladiators, the IceMen broke through with the game's first goal five minutes into the second thanks to a Josh Beaulieu power play goal. It was only the second power play goal allowed in the last 33 penalty kills by the stingy Gwinnett defense. Entering the night's game, the Gladiators were seventh in the league with an 87.9% penalty kill rate.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
