ECHL Kalamazoo Wings

Martin earns second straight shutout

November 29, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- For his second consecutive start Joel Martin (3-2-0-1) put on a goaltending clinic. Kalamazoo's netminder kept the ECHL's top shooting team at bay, as the Kalamazoo Wings shutout the Fort Wayne Komets 4-0 Friday night at Wings Stadium. .

Putting on a passing display, Yanni Gourde and Eric Kattelus worked the puck around the attack zone. Looking towards the net, Kattelus sent a backdoor pass to Aaron Clarke (2nd) and recorded his 100th career point midway in the first period.

An innocent shot proved to pay dividends for the K-Wings half way through the second period. Trying to avoid going into the neutral zone, Mike Matczak (1st) sent a wrist shot through a screen finding room past goaltender Cody Reichard.

In the third, Kalamazoo found help from newly acquired Matt Firman. The former Komet, who has making his K-Wings debut, dug the puck out from the side boards, setting up an Aaron Clarke (3rd) short-handed goal.

Matt Caria (1st) joined the scoring frenzy just 1:43 after Clarke goal to close out the scoring.

The K-Wings penalty-killing unit has been phenomenal during the current home stand, denying all 11 power-plays they have faced and scoring a shorthanded goal.
