CINCINNATI, OH ¬" The Wheeling Nailers used five third period goals to defeat the Cincinnati Cyclones 7-2 at. US Bank Arena Friday night. The victory gives the Nailers sole possession of first place in the North Division.
The Cylones Barrett Ehgoetz started the scoring at 3:10 of the first period. Ehgoetz picked up the loose puck off a rebound at the side of the crease, and slipped it past Nailers goaltender Patrick Killeen. A little more than a minute later, Wheeling tied the game as Ben Street broke into the zone on a 2-on-1 rush, and slid a pass across the slot to Nick Petersen who ripped it past Cyclones netminder Marc Chevrie.
Cincinnati took advantage of a turnover to reclaim the lead. The Nailers Sebastian Bisaillon slipped at center, losing the puck. Cyclones forward Kevin Roeder pick up the loose rubber and took off on the breakaway, and fired a shot past Killen to give his club the 2-1 lead late in the first. Wheeling tied the game at two, scoring the lone goal in the second period. Dany Masse scored his first goal of the season on a shot in front at 14:44 of the second period.
The Nailers erupted in the third period scoring five goals in the final stanza. The first was a shorthanded goal by Casey-Pierro Zabotel, as he won a foot race for the puck and flipped a shot on the blocker side of Chevrie, giving the Nailers the 3-2 lead. It would be a lead the Nailers would not surrender, adding four more goals in the third. Ben Street and Joey Haddad both registered goals, while Jason Desantis and Kyle Bushee added power play markers to lead Wheeling to the 7-2 victory.
