Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, N.Y. - Goaltender Mike Brodeur, appearing in his 200th professional game, made 30 saves on Saturday night at First Arena as the Elmira Jackals (14-8-5-0) earned their first shutout of the season, 5-0, over the Toledo Walleye (9-13-2-1). 3,837 fans saw the action at First Arena, the Jackals' sixth sellout of the 2010-2011 season.
Kevin DeVergilio's right-circle shot was tipped in by Brock McBride at the 19:36 mark of the first period off of a faceoff, putting the Jackals on the board entering the first intermission, 1-0. The goal extended McBride's point streak to eight games (3g-8a).
With the Jackals on the power play, Jamie Fraser fed DeVergilio at the left post, with DeVergilio jamming the puck into the net 41 seconds into the second period to make it 2-0.
At 15:01 of the second, Justin Donati tipped in a loose puck on the doorstep past Walleye netminder Joe Palmer with assists going to Corey Cowick and Brennan Turner to extend the Jackals lead to 3-0.
Yannick Tifu fed Donati on a two-on-one early in the third period, with Donati driving the puck in from the right goal line at 1:45 to give the Jackals a 4-0 advantage.
A.J. Perry redirected a Turner shot past Palmer at 5:25 to cap the scoring, 5-0.
Brodeur improved to 2-1 with Elmira, while Palmer fell to 3-6-0-0 with the Walleye, stopping 13 of 18 shots.
Brodeur's shutout was the 13th of his professional career and his seventh in the ECHL. He had not appeared in a game since Nov. 6 with Elmira, and was assigned to the Jackals from their AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, earlier in the day.
The shutout was the first of the season for the Jackals and their first since Mar. 21 of last season when they blanked the Johnstown Chiefs.
The Jackals are off until Dec. 29 when they head to Trenton to take on the Devils. Elmira returns home on Jan. 7 against the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:35 p.m. For tickets, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto JackalsHockey.com.
