Steelheads fall in shootout

BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (12-7-6) fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Victoria Salmon Kings (11-13-3), giving the team three-of-four points over a two-game home set against the ECHL's only Canadian-based club. Rookie Kael Mouillierat had three points and extended his point-scoring streak to five games, and Mark Derlago had a goal and two assists in the losing effort for the Steelheads, who head on the road tomorrow for a game Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Peter Vandermeer scored the only goal of the first period at 11:38 of the opening frame when he tapped a rebound by Idaho goalie Mike Zacharias to give Victoria a 1-0 lead.

Junior Lessard scored on a rebound for the Steelheads at 1:11 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1 with assists going to Mouillierat and Derlago on the power play. The game stayed tied at 1-1 for most of the second period before Gord Burnett regained the lead for Victoria on a deflected point shot at 18:25 of the middle frame to make the score 2-1.

Derlago scored on a rebound from a near-impossible angle at 7:23 of the third period to tie the game for the Steelheads at 2-2 for his 14th goal of the season, assisted by Tyler Ludwig and Mouillierat.

Mouillierat gave Idaho its first and only lead of the game at 15:22 of the third period on a rebound power play goal- assisted by Derlago- for his 12th tally of the season.

Idaho's lead lasted just 4:02; Matt Siddall scored for Victoria with the Salmon Kings' net empty and the extra attacker on the ice with 36 seconds remaining to tie the game at 3-3.

After a scoreless overtime, Victoria scored the only goal in a shootout that lasted six rounds. Defenseman Ryan Turek scored the shootout winner for Victoria, earning the Salmon Kings the second point.

Mike Zacharias is 7-3-3 in net for Idaho after the shootout loss; he stopped 26 of 29 Victoria shots. David Shantz was the winner in net; his record is 11-13-3 after turning away 29 of 32 Idaho shots.

The Steelheads are in action on the road on December 18th and 19th in Las Vegas; December 21st and 22nd in Utah; and December 28th and 29th in Alaska. The next home games for the Idaho Steelheads are December 31st and January 1st, 2011.
