Season/All-Time Series: Nailers 1, Beast 0
Season/All-Time Series at Powerade Centre: Nailers 1, Beast 0
Part One Goes Our Way
The Wheeling Nailers got their three-game road trip to Brampton started in fine fashion on Friday night, as they picked up a 5-2 victory over the Beast at Powerade Centre. Zack Torquato needed just 36 seconds to open the scoring for Wheeling, as he redirected Mike Ratchuk's point shot into the back of the cage. Second periods have been one of the strengths for the Nailers this season, and that continued on Friday, as the lead increased to four, thanks to goals by Tyler Fernandez, David Gilbert, and Derek Army. Army added a second marker in the third period, giving him a team-leading total of 14, while Eric Hartzell took care of business for his ninth win of the year, making 32 saves.
Their Special Teams Were Beastly
The Brampton Beast had two bright spots in their 5-2 setback to the Nailers on Friday night, and both came via special teams. With Wheeling carrying a 4-0 lead into the third period, the Beast began to chip away at their deficit, shrinking the margin to two. Stephon Thorne was the first Brampton player to dent the twine, as he completed a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush with Mike MacIsaac. MacIsaac was also involved in the scoring of the second tally for the home team, as he grabbed the rebound of David Ling's shot, shoveling it over to Justin Donati, who connected for a power play goal. Trevor Cann faced another barrage of shots in goal for the Beast, as he ended up with 32 saves on 37 chances.
Fast Start in the First
Prior to Friday night, first periods had been a serious struggle for the Nailers in the month of January, as they had been outscored 8-1 in the first six contests. However, Wheeling wasted little time in throwing that statistic into the garbage, as Zack Torquato put the visitors ahead at the 36-second mark of the opening stanza. Torquato's tally marked the fourth time this season that the Nailers scored a goal during the first minute of a game, and the 36 seconds tied David Gilbert's goal on November 26th for the second quickest. Wheeling's three-goal middle frame raised the season total to 42 goals in the second period, which leads the third (33) and first (24) periods by nearly ten and twenty respectively.
Goalies Seeing Tons of Rubber
Trevor Cann and Grant Rollheiser may not have the most pleasant goals against averages in the ECHL, but the two netminders for the Beast have certainly seen their fair share of shots. With Friday's game in the books, Brampton has allowed 1,334 shots on goal in 33 contests, which divides down to a 40.42 average each night. While Stockton's 1,381 shots against are the most in the league, the Beast's average is 5.01 per game higher than the Thunder, giving them the largest amount in the ECHL. Wheeling ranks 22nd in average shots for (28.82), but peppered the Brampton cage with 37 attempts on Friday. The Nailers allow 31.15 shots per game, which is the ninth highest in the league, while Brampton takes 28.88 shots per game, which amounts to .06 greater than Wheeling.
Taking a Win Through Customs
Saturday night marks the second of four head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Beast this season, with all four battles between the two clubs scheduled to be played at Powerade Centre. On Friday night, Wheeling secured its first ever victory outside of the United States, as well as its second against a Canadian based team. The triumph was also the Nailers' third of the season against a Western Conference opponent, after a two-game sweep of Utah in December. The loss dropped Brampton to 1-8-1 against Eastern Conference opponents, as the Beast clash with Elmira, Reading, and Toledo in 2014-15.
January 23rd & 24th will be a two-game series at home against Fort Wayne, as the new jumbotron will make its debut.
Friday's promotions include: Flat Screen Friday, courtesy of The Highlands and The Law Firm of Bordas and Bordas... Mike Ratchuk Poster Giveaway (2,000), presented by RSQP Print & Design... Wheeling Island Nailer Night... Frosty Friday .
Saturday's game will be Star Wars Night, as well as a ski cap giveaway to the first 1,000 kids (14 & under) in attendance. That night will also feature the annual Boy Scout Sleepover.
