January 17, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
Independence, MO - The Missouri Mavericks (14-18-2-2, 32 points) fell for the sixth consecutive game on Saturday night (0-5-1-0) losing a 3-1 decision to the Rapid City Rush (16-20-0-2, 34 points) in front of a sold out crowd of 5,800 at the Independence Events Center.
The loss moves the Mavericks below the Rush in the standings sitting in sixth place in the Central Division and for Rapid City, it is their second consecutive win and moves their road record above .500 at 10-9-0-1 for the season.
The Mavericks have not won a game since January 2nd, a 4-2 win over Quad City, and are now 3-3-1 on the season against Rapid City.
The two teams played a tight, hard-fought first period with the Rush gaining momentum late in the frame with Jesse Schultz scoring his 13th goal of the season with less than a minute to play in the opening period.
Rapid City would add to their lead in the second period with a goal from Andrew Huff, his first of the year, scored at the 5:47 mark of the second frame.
The Mavericks would cut the lead in half on their third power play of the game with Andrew Courtney scoring his 11th goal of the season (his first goal in his last nine games, last goal came on Dec. 26) making the score 2-1. Jack Downing and Lindsay Sparks earned the assists.
The Mavs would battle until the end but an empty-net goal from Scott Brannon, his third goal of the season, would put the game on ice for the visitors.
Former Missouri goaltender John Griggs made 33 saves in the game winning his first decision for the Rush since being signed in recent weeks.
Mike Clemente made 23 saves for Missouri taking the loss, he falls to 6-11-0-1 on the season.
Missouri will play next on Monday in a special early start game in Allen on Martin Luther King Day. Face-off is set for 1:05 PM (CST) at the Allen Event Center.
