Beast Unable to Nail Down Wheeling

BRAMPTON, ON- On Emergency Service Night in Brampton, the Beast (11-20-2) fought valiantly, but ended up coming up short, ultimately falling to the Wheeling Nailers (17-17-0) by a score of 5-2 to open a 3-game series in front of a packed house at the Powerade Centre.
Stephon Thorne and Justin Donati each had goals for the Beast, while Trevor Cann made 33 saves in the loss. Both David Ling and Jason Pitton got into tussles that ignited both the crowd and the Beast, swinging momentum in the team's favour after both bouts, but sadly it wasn't enough to overcome a powerful Nailers cycle and forecheck.
With bragging rights on the line, the night started out on fire with the Peel Regional Police and Brampton Fire Department squaring off in the first annual 'Guns N Hoses' charity game. The proceeds from the contest went to Regen Brampton, a community organization that cares for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless by providing essential services such as free breakfast, access to inexpensive clothing and medical care.
The police and fire chiefs, as well as Linda Jeffrey, the newly elected mayor of Brampton, were in attendance to see the Peel Police chase down the Brampton Fire Department in a back and forth match up that saw the police win in overtime on a power-play goal. The two teams both scored less than two minutes in, and were deadlocked in a 4-4 tie after regulation until the Peel Regional Police scored just over a minute into the extra frame.
The Nailers must have taken notes in the previous game, as they came out of the gate extremely quickly in the first period, scoring just over 30 seconds into the frame on a rebound goal by Zack Torquato, his ninth of the year. The Beast looked sluggish after the goal until David Ling decided to spark the team with a fight against Wheeling's Harrison Ruopp just under five minutes into the period. Giving up 7 inches and over 20 pounds, Ling held his own in the tilt, ultimately giving the team the boost it needed to complete the period only down by a goal.
Unfortunately, the second period started out the same as the first for the Beast. The Nailers were all over Brampton, coming up with another marker to put themselves up 2-0 just over six minutes into the period. As the game continued, the hard hitting, tight checking affair turned into the teams trading chances back and forth. The Nailers made it 3-0 at 10:01 of the frame on a subtle flick shot by David Gilbert that just got over the out-stretched pad of Trevor Cann. After a terrific Brampton power play that saw the Beast control the puck in the Wheeling zone for the full two minutes, a turnover at the blueline led to a Nailers 2 on 1, with Derek Army capitalizing on the chance for his 13th goal of the season.
The third period was a different story as the Beast controlled the play throughout the frame. Stephon Thorne's shorthanded goal just three minutes in gave the Beast and the crowd some much needed life. A spirited tilt between Brampton's leading goal scorer, Jason Pitton, and Wheeling's Clark Seymour energized the crowd and the team even more. Justin Donati scored his fourth of the season just over three minutes later, bringing the deficit to just two, but that would be as close as the Beast would get as Wheeling put the nail in the coffin with Army's second goal of the night with just under two minutes left to play.
Saturday is Hockey Day in Brampton, where local minor hockey teams will have the opportunity to play before the Beast game. The first 2500 fans will also receive a Brampton Beast mini stick courtesy of the Monte Carlo Inn.
