Pitton the Second Star in Beast's Centennial Game

Brampton Beast News Release

BRAMPTON, ON - On a landmark night for Jason Pitton and the Brampton Beast (11-21-2), which saw the team celebrate both the franchise's 100th game and Pitton's 100th in a Beast uniform, the home team lost the momentum they gained from a terrific third period last night to ultimately fall to the Wheeling Nailers (18-17-0) by a final score of 7-2.

It was Hockey day in Brampton, with fans and players alike joining in the festivities at the Powerade Centre. Alternate Captain Pitton, the only player to suit up for all 100 of the Beast's franchise games, led the way with a goal and an assist for the home team. David Ling added another while Trevor Cann made 39 saves in the loss that saw Tyler Donati, Elgin Reid and head coach Brent Hughes ejected from the contest.

The day began with minor hockey teams from across the Brampton region getting an opportunity to skate on the Powerade Centre's NHL-sized ice surface and enjoying a free practice courtesy of the Beast. The teams participating in the event included the Brampton Novice Hawks, the West Mall Lightning Novice select team and the Halton Hills Thunder. All three teams were extended an invitation to stick around to cheer on the Beast, with the Brampton Hawks being the lucky team to win a suite for the night to enjoy the view. The Beast commemorated their 100th game by giving those teams, as well as the rest of the first 2500 fans to attend the game, a Brampton Beast mini stick, courtesy of the Monte Carlo Inn.

The first period started eerily similar to last night's contest, with the Nailers jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on a bad-luck goal that ricocheted off the cross bar, Trevor Cann's arm and into the back of the net. With just under four minutes left in the period, Wheeling put themselves up 2-0 after Clark Seymour made a good pinch at the blue line to ignite a 2-on-1 and an easy goal for Patrick McGrath. A spirited tilt between the Beast's Elgin Reid and the Nailers' Harrison Ruopp erupted to end the first period give the team and crowd some much needed life heading into the second stanza.

The second period saw both teams trade chances back and forth with no scoring until less than two minutes left in the frame, when Riley Austin found David Ling with a beautiful outlet pass. Ling broke into the Wheeling zone all alone, faked a slap shot, and then easily walked around Nailers' goalie Eric Hartzell for his second of the year. Jason Pitton also picked up an assist on the play, while Austin recorded his first point as a Beast. The high wouldn't last long however, as Wheeling scored under a minute later to restore their two goal lead and enter the final frame up 3-1.

The Beast lost their grip on the game in the third period, as Wheeling scored three straight goals to take a five goal lead. Brampton would regain momentum towards the end of the period when Jason Pitton scored his 13th of the year to finish off a nice 3-on-2 break, but it was too little too late. Wheeling added another goal with just over a minute left to end the game with a score of 7-2.

The Beast continue their six game homestand when they welcome the Nailers back to the Powerade Centre for their final game of the weekend tomorrow. Sunday will also be Beach Party Day for the Beast, where fans can have fun in the sun and participate in a paper airplane toss during the second intermission with a chance to win two FREE flights courtesy of RedTag! Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905-564-1684.
