Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Syracuse Mets (32-54) used the long ball to sweep a doubleheader against the Worcester Red Sox (46-40), 10-8 and 5-4, on Friday at Polar Park.
The WooSox began the day offensively with a bang, scoring four runs in two separate innings in game one. In the first, Yairo Muñoz extended his hit streak to 33 games with a leadoff single-it was the first of five hits in the inning, including RBI singles from Josh Ockimey, Jack Lopez and Jhonny Pereda that helped the home team go up 4-0.
Muñoz added a single in the seventh inning of game two of the doubleheader, continuing his streak for a 34th game. With that swing, Muñoz tied the Boston Red Sox organizational record, a mark set by Dom DiMaggio in 1949.
In the fourth, Worcester loaded the bases for Joey Meneses, who came through with a sac-fly deep to left to bring a run home. Johan Mieses was next-playing in his first game since returning from the Olympics-and he crushed a two-run double. Three batters later, Jack Lopez cracked an RBI single, and the WooSox led 8-0.
From there, it was all Syracuse, as it scored six fifth inning runs on a two-run double from Wilfredo Tovar, an RBI single by Patrick Mazeika and a Cheslor Cuthbert three-run double. Five of the six runs were charged to Ryan Brasier, who allowed five hits and got two outs in an inning that made it an 8-6 game.
The Mets got four in the top of the seventh, the final inning, starting with a run-scoring fielder's choice from Mason Williams. Then, with two on and two out, former Red Sox Josh Reddick a delivered a pinch-hit three-run home run in his first game with the New York Mets organization to put his team on top 10-8, the final score in game one.
In game two, Syracuse went up early and held on to its lead to grab a victory. The road team went up 5-0 on a Mark Payton RBI double in the third and a three-run homer by Chance Sisco in the fifth.
Mets starter Zack Godley was strong in his first three innings, but ran in to trouble in the fourth. The right-hander hit a man, walked the next and then allowed a three-run blast by Ryan Fitzgerald, a 376-foot shot over the Worcester Wall in right. The homer marked Fitzgerald's third in Worcester and 13th of the Minor League season.
The WooSox managed one run in the bottom of the seventh on a Delino DeShields RBI double after Muñoz' hit streak extending infield single, but the Mets got the final out to close the doubleheader sweep.
The WooSox continue the six-game series Saturday at 4:05 p.m. against the Syracuse Mets at Polar Park. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage starts live at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. Worcester's Kutter Crawford (1-1, 3.38) faces Adam Oller.
