Memphis Redbirds News Release
NORFOLK, Virginia - The Memphis Redbirds fell victim to the Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate, Baltimore Orioles) for the third time in the last four nights, dropping a 7-4 game at Harbor Park on a warm Friday night in the middle of August.
Early on, Norfolk (34-52) tacked on single runs in the first and second innings to grab a 2-0 lead. Adley Rutschman plated the initial run with an RBI single in the first and Rylan Bannon brought himself home with a solo shot leading off the bottom of the second. Rustchman is 8-17 in his first four Triple-A games with five runs driven in.
Memphis (41-47) rallied back with four runs in the top of the fifth to take their first lead of the night. The 'Birds played longball - first, Kramer Robertson lined a three-run shot over the left-field wall to give the road team the lead. Then, Juan Yepez launched a moonshot of his own to left field, his 15th home run of the season in Triple-A.
However, the lead was short-lived. The Tides roared in front with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Nevin had a two-run double in the fifth in the midst of a multi-hit game, and Bannon smacked another home run (this one a two-run shot) in the seventh to make it a three-run game. Incredibly, Bannon has hit five home runs this week and seven dingers against the Redbirds all season long.
Isaac Mattson locked the game down late for the Norfolk Tides, earning a six-out save by pitching consecutive 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth. The Norfolk pitching staff set down the final eight Memphis batters in order en route to victory.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
