Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Indians stranded the game-tying runner on second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lose their third consecutive game to the St. Paul Saints on Friday night, 7-5.
Back-to-back singles led off the ninth inning to begin the Indians second rally of the night. Tucupita Marcano doubled with one out to score one run and put the game-tying run in scoring position with the heart of the order coming up. Two strikeouts by Yennier Cano (S, 1) shut down the threat to end the game.
St. Paul (47-40) came out of the gate with four runs in the second inning, capped by Jimmy Kerrigan's third home run of the series. Tomas Telis then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0.
A solo home run off the bat of Michael Chavis in the bottom of the fourth inning marked the Indians (42-45) first hit and first run of the game. It was his fourth home run in an Indianapolis uniform and second of the series.
Ben Rortvedt singled home Gilberto Celestino following a one-out double to tack on an insurance run for the Saints in the top of the seventh before Indy threatened a comeback twice in the final three frames.
With two outs to begin the bottom half of the seventh, the next six Indians batters reached base safely to spark a rally. The first run came around to score on a single off the bat of Hunter Owen, and with two runners in scoring position Taylor Davis roped his second hit of the night, a two-run double, to bring Indy within three runs. The game-tying run was stranded on base in both the seventh and ninth innings.
Just three of the seven runs allowed by Steven Wright (L, 4-7) were earned following an error that extended the Saints four-run third frame. Lewis Thorpe (W, 1-2) allowed just one run on two hits in 5.2 innings.
The Indians will look to break a three-game losing skid on Saturday night at 7:05 PM ET at Victory Field. RHP Beau Sulser (5-5, 4.41) will face off against RHP Beau Burrows (2-1, 4.85).
