Four-Run Comeback Goes Wayside as Tides Lose in Extras

August 13, 2021 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Tides made their second four-run comeback in their second straight day after losing, 7-6, after being down 6-2 in the sixth inning. A homer by Mason McCoy and Rylan Bannon in the seventh and ninth innings, send the game into extras, when the Tides lost to the Redbirds in eleven innings, after stranding the bases loaded.

After three straight walks by Tides Starter Mike Baumann (4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 4 SO) to start the game, the Redbirds scored a run after a ground out by Alec Burleson that allowed Kramer Robertson to walk home for the first score of the game.

Mason McCoy singled and reached third on an Adley Rutschman single. McCoy was brought in by Kelvin Gutierrez after a ground out double play. The score was tied 1-1 after the first inning.

Baumann walked a season-high with six batters in 4.0 innings pitched. It was also a Tides season-high for most walks by a starting pitcher. He struck out four, allowed one hit and a run after being relieved by Ryan Hartman. The Tides have also set their season-high in walks as a team with 11.

Hartman then allowed three runs on two hits, in the fifth inning after only getting one out. A ground out by Robertson is easily taken by Rutschman at first. But a Nolan Gorman single, a Juan Yepez walk, and a Burleson double is all she wrote for Hartman who is then taken out for reliever David Lebron.

Taking a 3-2 lead, the Redbirds continue their hot hitting inning with singles by Ali Sanchez, Evan Mendoza, and Rayder Ascanio to bring in one more run, putting the Redbirds up 4-2 all in the fifth inning.

After only having one hit in the first four innings, the Tides allow eight hits in the fifth and sixth inning combined. Ali Sanchez brought in the sixth run of the game for the Redbirds, with a double that brought in Nolan Gorman and Yepez, who got on with a double and a walk, respectfully.

The Tides answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs themselves. Two were on base after a single by Rutschman and a walk by Tyler Nevin. Stevie Wilkerson subbed in for Domingo Leyba as pinch-hitter, after Leyba goes out with a injury after a foul ball off his foot. Wilkerson comes in on a 1-2 count and hits a single to left field to load the bases. Yusniel Diaz brought in two after a single to deep center field, scoring Rutschman and Nevin. Mason McCoy homers for the seventh time this year with a rip to left center field to bring the Tides within one heading into the eighth inning.

Entering the ninth inning, with two outs and nobody on, Rylan Bannon hits his third home run in two days with a solo shot to left, tying the game at 6-6. With two outs and one on first, the Tides couldn't ring anyone home, so the game went into extras.

In the 11th inning, with Gorman advanced to third on a wild pitch by Tides pitcher Felix Bautista. The Redbirds hit a sacrifice fly right next to the first base side, allowing Gorman to score a run from third. The Redbirds went up 7-6 in the top of the eleventh.

The Tides were able to load the bases in the bottom-half of the 11th, the Tides unfortunately couldn't score and lost, 7-6.

Adley Rutschman kept showing everyone why he is the number one prospect in Major League Baseball. In each of his three games for the Tides, he has a hit and an RBI. His has an average of .462 (6-for-13), to go along with four RBI, two doubles, two runs, and a stolen base. He's only struck out twice. Rutschman and McCoy both had three hit games tonight, with Rutschman hitting a double and McCoy hitting a homerun.

Tides lose game three in the series after tying their season-high hit total at 13 hits on the night. The next game for the tides will be Friday, August 12, at Harbor Park facing the Memphis Redbirds again for game four-of-six game series.
