Iowa Cubs News Release
PAPILLION, NE - The Iowa Cubs (38-48) held off the Omaha Storm Chasers' (48-38) late comeback attempt, winning 5-4, Friday at Werner Park.
Both pitchers started off strong, matching each other with two scoreless frames. Omaha cracked into the run column first in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a run on a Bobby Witt Jr. RBI single.
That was the only run they would score against Iowa's starter Adrian Sampson, who recorded Iowa's second consecutive quality start. The righty went 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four.
With one swing of the bat, Michael Hermosillo gave Iowa the lead, delivering a three-run blast in the fifth inning. Trent Giambrone added an RBI triple in the sixth, extending the lead to 4-1.
Their lead would stay there until the eighth inning, when Ryan McBroom hit a two-run blast followed immediately by an MJ Melendez solo shot to tie the game at four. In the top of the ninth, Ian Miller hit an RBI double to bring home Zach Davis as the go-ahead run.
One run was all Tony Cingrani needed, as he shut the door on Omaha, throwing a scoreless bottom of the ninth to secure a 5-4 victory for Iowa.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- In his second major league rehab appearance since hitting the injured list with a blister on July 29, Dillon Maples recorded just one out. He allowed three runs on two hits, both home runs, while also walking and striking out one batter.
