Monsters Upended in Rochester 5-3

ROCHESTER, NY- A three-goal third period for the Rochester Americans handed the Lake Erie Monsters (10-8-0-1) a 5-3 defeat on the road Friday night. Andrew Agozzino, David van der Gulik, and Bryan Lerg scored in the Monsters loss. Rochester (9-7-2-2) snapped the Monsters two-game win streak, as well as the Monsters four-game road win streak. The Monsters are back on the ice Saturday in Hamilton to conclude their three-game road trip with a 7:00 PM faceoff.

Andrew Agozzino banged home the rebound from a Stefan Elliott point shot for his fifth goal of the season at 1:26 of the opening period to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead. Gabe Beaupre also assisted on the tally. The lead, however, was short-lived, as Rochester tied the game at 1-1 when Joel Armia also netted a rebound at 5:21 of the first period.

David van der Gulik took a pass from Mark Olver at 4:37 of the second period, and van der Gulik converted on a low shot from the right circle to regain a one-goal lead for the Monsters with his third goal of the season. van der Gulik's goal made the score 2-1. Rochester would counter again, as Frederick Roy scored on a scramble in front of the Monsters net, tying the game at 2-2 at 11:54 of the second period.

Rochester broke the tie at 11:14 of the second period when Johan Larsson fired a slapshot past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard from the left wing circle at 11:14 of the third period, but the Monsters countered 25 seconds later. Elliott's point shot was deflected by Bryan Lerg, who netted his ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3. Along with Elliott, Dan Maggio collected an assist on the goal.

Phil Varone scored the eventual game-winning goal for Rochester at 18:02 of the third period, giving Rochester the 4-3 lead. Varone took possession following a wild bounce off the glass, skated to the slot, and sent a wrister in for the goal. With one minute left, Rochester's Jamie Tardif netted an empty-net goal to give the Americans a 5-3 lead.

Calvin Pickard stopped 26 of 30 shots in the loss; he is 5-6-1. Nathan Lieuwen stopped 33 of 36 Monsters shots, and is 5-3-0 in net for the Americans this season.

The Monsters finish their three-game road trip Saturday night in Hamilton with the action beginning at 7:00 PM and airing live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
