Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME - Brett Hextall provided the lone Pirates goal while Mark Visentin made 31 saves but it was not enough, as the Worcester Sharks defeated the Pirates 3-1 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Pirates had their three game home point streak snapped as a result of the loss and dropped to 7-7-1-2 on the season.
The Pirates showed plenty of fight early in the game as Kyle Hagel, Andy Miele and Chris Brown all received fighting majors within a four minute span during the first period. But while fisticuffs were plentiful in the first, goals were a premium as the teams headed to the locker room scoreless.
The Sharks jumped on the board first with an early goal in the second period by Bracken Kearns. At 3:55, Worcester entered the zone and played the puck quickly on net. Visentin easily made the initial save, but the rebound dropped to his left and right onto the stick of Kearns who deposited the rebound into the back of the net.
The Sharks extended their lead on another rebound goal at 9:04 in the second period. Sebastian Stalberg took a shot from the right that Visentin easily kicked away, but the puck again bounced right to a Worcester stick. This time, James Livingston was the recipient of the fortuitous rebound and he buried his shot from the bottom left circle into the empty cage.
Being down two goals after two periods, the Pirates needed a strong start to the third and got just that when Brett Hextall cut the deficit to one. At 5:55 in the third, Hextall received a pass near the top of the right circle and fired a shot towards the net. The puck looked like it deflected off of a Sharks defender before trickling over the goal line.
Visentin was huge in net for the Pirates, making key saves in the third to keep the team in the game including a full split save during the third period to keep the deficit at one.
Brandon Gormley had a great chance with 7:00 left to knot the game at two, taking an open shot from between the hash marks, but Harri Sateri swallowed the shot, preserving the Worcester lead.
That was the last big chance the Pirates had, though, as Freddie Hamilton scored an empty net goal to clinch the win for Worcester and gave them their third straight win.
The Pirates are back in action Saturday when they travel to Springfield to take on the Falcons at 7 p.m. Tomorrow's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County. The game can also be heard online at portlandpirates.com by clicking "Listen Live" and can be seen live on AHL Live at ahllive.com. The pregame show starts at 6:40 with Jeff Mannix.
