Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - Adirondack Phantoms defenseman Bruno Gervais scored a power-play goal 1:47 into overtime, spoiling the Albany Devils comeback, 4-3, Friday at Times Union Center. Reid Boucher scored with 4:34 remaining in regulation, earning the Devils a point for the seventh time in the last nine games.
Albany controlled the majority of the play in their offensive end, owning a 38-20 shot advantage. Harri Pesonen and Reece Scarlett also scored for the Devils, who go to 11-7-1-1.
"I thought after the first period, we played really well," said assistant captain Tim Sestito. "We threw a ton of pucks at the net. There were a ton of rebounds sitting around. We just kind of got on the wrong side of them sometimes, but we battled.
"We weren't very detail oriented through the whole thing, which cost us some things. But we dug down and got that late goal and it was unfortunate that we couldn't kill the penalty at the end."
The Devils offensive pressure resulted in a 12-4 shot advantage in the first, 14-7 in the second and 12-5 in the third. Sestito nearly tied the game at 14:14 of the second, but a high stick nullified the would-be goal.
"[The referee] said you have to have possession," explained Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "He wasn't disagreeing that they touched it, but it was off a skate. It might have gone off of Heeter's ankle and then hit Lauridsen or whoever and then [Sestito] got it."
Adirondack's Petr Straka opened the scoring at 4:39 of the first. Harri Pesonen followed with his first goal of the season on a play that featured a Stefan Matteau assist at 12:29.
Before the end of the period, Kris Newbury made the score 2-1 Phantoms at 13:33.
Adirondack added to its lead early in the second as Jason Akeson found the back of the net 13 ticks after the puck drop.
Raman Hrabarenka and Kelly Zajac setup Scarlett's power-play tally at 13:16. The goal was the rookie's second of the season.
"I just kind of walked to the middle and saw an opening," Scarlett said. "It kind of deflected off of one of their guys, but I'll take goals any way I can get them."
Sestito's disallowed goal segued into the intermission. In the third, Mike Sislo and Zajac setup Boucher for his team-leading ninth tally of the season.
Once in overtime, a hooking call led to the Phantoms power play 27 seconds into the frame.
Heeter, who replaced an injured Yann Danis in the first, finished with 32 saves. Keith Kinkaid made 16 saves in his 11th outing of the season.
Albany went 1-4 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.
The Devils welcome the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to Times Union Center Saturday at 7 pm. Fans can stream the game online or on mobile devices at ahllive.com.
