LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
At Worcester (12/7): Goaltender Daniel Taylor stopped 37-of-40 shots in regulation and 4-of-5 shootout attempts for his first AHL win as the Manchester Monarchs edged the Worcester Sharks 4-3 in a shootout at the DCU Center on Friday night. Left wing Jeff Giuliano, center Patrick Jarrett and defenseman Brian Boyle tallied in regulation for the Monarchs followed by shootout goals from left wing Matt Moulson and center David Meckler. The Sharks got on the scoreboard with goals from left wing Lukas Kaspar, defenseman Derek Joslin and defenseman Patrick Traverse. Center Mike Iggulden was the lone sniper to beat Taylor in the shootout. Monarchs goaltender Taylor won his first AHL game in his debut with 37 saves, a new season record. Sharks netminder Thomas Greiss took the loss with 20 saves. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Worcester was 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
Vs. Chicago (12/8): Center Trevor Lewis scored his first professional hat trick as the Manchester Monarchs overcame the Chicago Wolves in a 7-4 victory at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Along with Lewis' hat trick, the Monarchs collected goals from right wing Teddy Purcell, center David Meckler, left wing Matt Moulson and center Marc-Andre Cliche. The Wolves scored goals from right wing Joey Crabb, center Kevin Doell, center Steve Martins and defenseman Nathan Oystrick. Monarchs netminder Daniel Taylor won his second game in a row stopping 23-of-27 shots. Wolves goaltender Ondrej Pavelec stopped 26-of-31 shots in the loss before being replaced by netminder Robert Gherson who stopped two shots. Manchester went 3-for-7 on the power play. Chicago was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Monarchs (10-11-2-1) are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 23 points.
The Monarchs power play remains atop the AHL with a 26.6-percentage and the penalty kill is in 28th place with 74.5-percent.
The Monarchs have the best home power play record as they have scored 21 goals on 64 opportunities at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Manchester has scored eight power play tallies on the road for 12th place in the league.
14 of the 24 Monarchs games thus far this season have been determined by one goal. The Monarchs are 7-4-2-1 in one goal games, 1-4-0-0 in two goal games, 1-3-0-0 in three goal games and 1-0-0-0 in four goal games.
Manchester is 7-1-1-0 when leading after the first period and 5-1-0-0 when leading after the second period.
When scoring first in the game, the Monarchs are 7-2-2-0.
The best days of the week for the Monarchs to play are on Saturday and Sunday. The team is 6-2-1-1 in 10 Saturday games this season and 2-1-1-0 in four Sunday games. On Wednesdays, the Monarchs have a record of 0-1-0-0. Manchester is 2-7-0-0 on Fridays thus far this season.
The Monarchs are 3-1 in shootouts this season.
Right wing Teddy Purcell (8-25=33) leads the Monarchs with 33 points in 24 games.
Purcell has scored at least one point in 19-of-24 games this season.
Purcell's 33 points also lead the AHL in overall scoring and is ranked first among rookies.
His 25 assists are ranked first in the AHL in that category and also rank first among rookies.
Purcell's 16 assists on the power play rank first in the AHL.
Center Gabe Gauthier (8-19=27) is ranked second on the Monarchs squad with 27 points in 21 games. He was recalled to the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday, December 2. The 5-foot-9, 193-pound native of Torrance, California, appeared in three games with the Kings this last week.
Gauthier's 19 assists are also tied for second on the Monarchs squad with defenseman Peter Harrold.
Gauthier scored at least one point in 17-of-21 games this season before his recall.
Gauthier's 27 points are tied for sevenh in the AHL.
Gauthier's 19 assists are also tied for sixth in the AHL in that category.
10 of Gauthier's 19 assists this season have come on the power play which ties him for eighth place in the AHL for power play assists.
Gauthier's six power play goals are tied for sixth place in the AHL among power play tallies.
Harrold leads Monarchs blueliners with 25 points (6-19=25) in 23 games.
15 of Harrold's 19 assists have come on the power play which ranks him second in the AHL for power play assists.
The second year defenseman is also ranked first among defensemen with 25 points and 19 assists.
Harrold's six goals are tied for fifth among defensemen.
Defenseman Brian Boyle is ranked fourth on the Monarchs squad this season, tied for fourth among AHL defensemen and tied for fifth place among AHL rookies with 20 points (9-11=20).
Boyle also ranks third among both AHL rookies and defensemen with 75 shots on goal this season.
Boyle's five power play goals are tied for first among defensemen and tied for third among rookies.
The rookie defenseman's two game-winning goals are also tied for second among rookies and tied for second among defenseman.
Boyle's nine goals are tied for the AHL lead among defensemen and are tied for third place with the rookies.
Center Trevor Lewis recorded his first professional hat trick on Saturday against the Chicago Wolves. The rookie has 11 points (5-6=11) in 24 games this season.
Left wing Paul Crosty is ranked seventh in the AHL with 82 penalty minutes.
Right wing Kevin Westgarth is tied for 13th place in the AHL in penalty minutes with 76 in 22 games. Westgarth is also ranked second among rookies in penalty minutes. He has 10 major penalties that also rank first among rookies.
Rookie goaltender Jonathan Quick (1-0-0) made his NHL debut with the Kings on Thursday, December 6 and collected his first win with 15 saves in the Kings 8-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
Rookie goaltender Daniel Taylor (2-0-0) made his AHL debut with the Monarchs on Friday, December 7 against the Worcester Sharks. Taylor set a new season record by stopping 37 shots in the Monarchs 4-3 shootout win against the Sharks. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound native Plymouth, England, stopped 23-of27 shots for his second win of the season in a 7-4 toppling of the Chicago Wolves on Saturday. Taylor is undefeated in five games this season with the Monarchs and the ECHL's Reading Royals with a record of 5-0-0.
