Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs scored the only goal of the game in overtime to beat the division leading Hartford Wolf Pack in front of 5,148 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.
"It was a solid team effort," commented Head Coach Mark Morris. "It was a dog fight. I thought our guys did a tremendous job on the 5-on-3 (penalty kill). The line of (Brian) Boyle, (Marc-Andre) Cliche and (Vladimir) Dravecky did a great job of shutting down the top line of Hartford."
Manchester (31-26-0-6, 68 points) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Hartford (34-23-3-3, 74 points) is in first place in the Atlantic Division.
The Monarchs needed only one goal to decide the scrappy battle against the visiting Wolf Pack. Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov netted his sixth goal of the season when the Monarchs skated into the Wolf Pack's zone only 38 seconds into the overtime period. Right wing Trevor Lewis dished the puck to center Brian Boyle who carried the puck into the Wolf Pack's zone. Boyle sent the puck from the right face-off circle across the ice to Voynov, high in the left circle, who put the one-timer past netminder Matt Zaba.
"That was a huge goal by Voynov and a tremendous setup by Boyle, he had a great game," said Morris. "To beat a team ahead of us in the standings is a great feat. We have to be proud of that one."
Manchester went 0-for-3 with an extra attacker while Hartford was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Monarchs host the Portland Pirates at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. The Monarchs are honoring those who serve and protect our country in the military, police and fire with American Pride Night on Saturday. The first 3,500 fans will receive raffle cards when they enter the arena for the chance to win a game worn specialty firefighter jersey that the Monarchs will be wearing that night. Fans can also bid on the jerseys through a silent auction and a post-game live auction.
