Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose hosted the Providence Bruins for the first time since the 2002-03 season and beat the visiting club 3-2 in a shootout in front of a full house at the MTS Centre on Friday night. Michael Grabner scored both regulation goals for Manitoba while Guillaume Desbiens and Jason Jaffray were the two snipers who capitalized in the shootout. League-leading goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 31 shots for his second win against the Bruins this season.

The first place seeds in their respective divisions, the Manitoba Moose and Providence Bruins, embarked on their third game of the season on Friday night at the MTS Centre.

It only took nine seconds for the Moose to register their first penalty, as Nolan Baumgartner was sent to the box for the tripping. Manitoba's penalty killers, fourth overall in the lead, ensured only one shot was registered on goaltender Cory Schneider before play resumed to five-on-five.

Providence benefited from their second and third man advantages in the early half of the first period, but like their first powerplay, the Bruins failed to break their goose-egg.

At 15:53, Kirk MacDonald stormed down the right side and wired the puck over Schneider's left pad to open the scoring on their 12th shot of the night.

Manitoba's penalty killers made their fifth appearance midway through the second period when Dylan Yeo was sent to the sin bin for delay of game.

At 12:44 Manitoba benefited from their second powerplay and even though they were able to bring their shot count to 11 they couldn't knot the score.

A scrap between Nathan McIver and Jeremy Reich ensued in front of the home net and after Reich fell to the ice both guilty parties were sentenced with five-minute fighting majors.

With 1:40 left in the second period, the Moose tied the game at one. Michael Grabner stole the puck away from the Bruins defenseman and slapped it into the net to even the score heading into the third.

Manitoba's powerplay unit made their third appearance at 7:25 and this time they connected. With a pass from Guillaume Desbiens, Michael Grabner snapped the puck behind Tuukka Rask for his second of the night, 2-1.

With 20 seconds left in regulation time Jeff Henry took advantage of the scramble in front of the home net and hit the mesh to tie the game at two and force overtime.

Overtime

Bruins right winger Mikko Lehtonen was handed a one-minute penalty for hooking but the Moose couldn't find the back of the net and the game was forced into a shootout.
