INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI - The Missouri Mavericks clinched their first-ever berth in the Kelly Cup Playoffs on Friday night, earning the 1 point necessary to officially place themselves in the post-season.
The Mavs are the first team in the ECHL this season to claim a playoff spot with their overwhelming record of 44-7-3-2 (93 points).
The Mavs fell to the Wichita Thunder for the first time this season with a 3-2 shootout loss on Friday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, marking the first time in 13 games that Missouri has not skated away with 2 points against their long-time rival.
Missouri's newest addition, Darian Dziurzynski, made an early impression on the fans in attendance to the Mavs second "Friday Night Ice" game - broadcast live on KSMO-TV (presented by Tickets for Less). Dziurzynski made an incredible goal after a relentless effort to get the home team on the board 1-0, 18:32 into his first game for Missouri. Andrew Courtney and C.J. Ludwig were credited with assists on the play. Click here to watch Dziurzynski's goal.
The Mavs carried their 1-0 lead through to the 3rd period, at which point net-minder Parker Milner had made 31 saves to keep the Thunder at bay.
Wichita broke through at 3:27 of the final frame of regulation when Kale Kerbashian netted his thirteenth goal of the season. Milner left the ice at that point and was replaced in goal by Steven Summerhays. Just 15 seconds later, the Thunder took the lead 2-1 with a quick goal via Logan Nelson.
David deKastrozza tied the game back up for the Mavericks at 8:26 off a feed from Dziurzynski and C.J. Ludwig.
When regulation hockey and a five-minute period of overtime could not determine a winner, the game was sent to a shootout, in which the Thunder emerged victorious over the Mavs for the first time all season when Miles Koules scored in the third round.
The Mavericks play their next game at home on Sunday, Mar. 6 against the Tulsa Oilers, and it's Faith & Family Night! Fans can enjoy the pre-game performance of 9th Hour outside the main entrance and the performance of the Eastside Worship band on the ice during the post-game skate with the team. Pre-register for the post-game skate at the Ticket Table behind section 109 on the arena concourse. $5 with skate rental, $2 with your own skates. Space is limited!
Puck drop is scheduled for 4:05p.m. at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
