Tuzzolino's Hat Trick Propels Jackals by Brampton
March 4, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - Nick Tuzzolino is a veteran of 556 professional hockey games, but tonight, he accomplished a new feat for the first time in his career. Tuzzolino recorded his first hat trick leading the Jackals past the Brampton Beast tonight 5-1. Shane Owen won his Jackals debut, making 22 saves just days after being acquired from the Indy Fuel. Chris Langkow and Colin Jacobs also scored in the Jackals victory.
The Jackals quickly jumped out in front firing the first salvo at 4:50 of the first period. Tyler Currier walked in the zone and dropped a pass to Spiro Goulakos who was trailing for a one-timer. Goulakos' shot attempt deflected off the heel of his stick and skirted over to Nick Tuzzolino who walked in the high slot and ripped a shot past Kenny Reiter for his first goal of the season. Elmira engulfed Brampton in waves of offense and went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead out-shooting the Beast 16-5.
The Jackals controlled the second period much like the opening frame and added to their lead at 15:08. Chris Langkow and Allan McPherson danced down the left wing side creating a give-and-go for Langkow who whistled a bar-down shot past Reiter from inside the circle following McPherson's drop pass. Langkow's marker was his ninth goal of the season and sent the Jackals into the second intermission up 2-0. The Jackals entered the game 20-1-2 when leading after two periods.
Nick Tuzzolino continued his career evening at 5:17 of the third period with a blast under the pad of Reiter for his second goal of the night assisted by Spiro Goulakos and Justin Bernhardt. Tuzzolino wasn't done yet; just under five minutes later he fired another shot from the point that bounced into the air and over the shoulder of Reiter to complete the hat trick. Chris Langkow and Zach Cohen assisted Tuzzolino's third goal of the night. Less than a minute later, Colin Jacobs joined the scoring party redirecting Kyle Bushee's point shot past Reiter for his 12th goal of the season. Matt Garbowsky also added an assist on Jacobs' marker. With the game well in hand, the only number that mattered down the stretch was zero as Shane Owen was chasing a shutout in his Jackals debut. Colin Murray spoiled the opportunity with a shorthanded goal at 18:25 of the final frame, but Owen still posted a strong debut and earned the victory.
Shane Owen turned aside 22 of 23 shots faced to earn his 14th win of the season and first in as many starts with the Jackals. Kenny Reiter allowed five goals on 42 shots faced and was handed the loss.
