Missions Homer for the 10th Straight Game, Drop Series Opener to Midland

SAN ANTONIO - Despite striking out 10 batters for the fifth consecutive game, the Missions allowed nine runs in their series opener against the Midland RockHounds. With four errors and four runs scored, the Missions fall to the RockHounds by a final score of 9-4.

Brandon Komar was the starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. He ran into some issues in the top of the first inning. Max Schuemann hit a single to lead-off the game. Devin Foyle reached base on a throwing error from Olivier Basabe. Schuemann advanced to third base on the play and Foyle advanced to second. Jonah Bride drew a walk to load the bases. Midland scored the first run of the game after JJ Schwarz was walked by Komar. Midland added another on a sacrifice fly from Jhonny Santos. On the play, Jorge Ona threw out Bride trying to advance to third base. Midland had an early 2-0 lead.

The Missions had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second inning. Jorge Ona began the inning with a line drive single. With one out, he advanced to third base on a single from Michael Curry. On the play, Curry was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. With Ona on third and two outs, Juan Fernandez struck out looking to end the threat.

Midland added two more runs in the top of the third inning. With one out, Komar allowed a walk to Schwarz. After striking out Santos, Logan Davidson hit a single to right field and Schwarz advanced to third base. A wild pitch from Komar moved Davidson to second base. Both runners scored after a throwing error from Eguy Rosario. Edwin Diaz hit a ground ball to Rosario who overthrew Olivier Basabe at first base. The RockHounds extended their lead to 4-0.

The RockHounds increased their lead in the top of the 4th. Facing Henry Henry, The RockHounds loaded the bases after two base hits and a walk. Bride reached base on a fielder's choice as Cordoba forced out a runner at home for the first out of the inning. With the bases still loaded, Henry struck out the following batter. However, Santos hit a two-run single to center field to make it a 6-0 Midland lead.

Midland put a crooked number on the board with a three-run sixth inning. Facing Dylan Rheault, Foyle singled to lead off the inning. He advanced to third after a single from Schwarz. Santos scored Foyle on an RBI single. After a walk to load the bases, Schwarz scored after a throwing error from Allen Cordoba. The Missions trailed 9-0.

San Antonio scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Agustin Ruiz drew a walk to extend the inning. Rosario hit a double and advanced Ruiz to third base. A wild pitch from Brady Feigl scored Ruiz and ended the shutout.

The Missions added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing Dalton Sawyer, Kelvin Melean drew a lead-off walk. The Missions loaded the bases after a walk to Agustin Ruiz and a single from Rosario. Melean scored after a wild pitch from Sawyer. Ruiz scored on a groundout from Ona. Ona was removed from the game following his groundout.

Juan Fernandez extended the Missions home run streak to 10 games. With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Fernandez lifted a fly ball over the left field wall. His 7th homer of the season made it a 9-4 ballgame.

The San Antonio Missions continue their six-game series with the Midland RockHounds on Wednesday, August 25th. Right-hander Pedro Avila (0-2, 4.73) is scheduled to start for the Missions. Left-hander Jared Koenig (5-3, 3.04) is scheduled to start for the RockHounds. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
