McNutt Dominates Bees with Ten Strikeouts in Chiefs Win

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs combined for 12 runs and 15 hits with a 10-strikeout performance by ace Trey McNutt in a 12-7 win over the Burlington Bees Wednesday night. The Chiefs won two out of three in the series scoring 12 runs in each win to improve to 36-30 with three games left in the first half.

McNutt set the tone early by striking out all three Bees in the bottom of the first inning. By the time he toed the rubber again the Chiefs offense had staked the Peoria ace to a 5-0 lead. Bees starter Nick Wooley hit Greg Rohan to start the top of the second and then walked DJ Fitzgerald. Nelson Perez reached on an infield single and with one out Charles Thomas singled to left for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. Hak-Ju Lee singled with two outs for a 4-0 lead and took second on the throw home. Logan Watkins capped the five run inning with a single to left that easily plated Lee.

McNutt struck out the first two Bees in the second inning as well to run his streak to five consecutive strikeouts to start the game. Rene Oriental ended that streak with a two-out single but he was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning. McNutt cruised through the Bees in order in the third with one more strikeouts. Burlington got their final base-runner against the Chiefs starter when JD Alfaro walked with one out in the fourth. McNutt responded by striking out Wil Myers and Joey Lewis to end the inning. He got Carlo Testa swinging to start the fifth and after a pop out, McNutt punched out Oriental for his tenth strikeout of the night.

The Chiefs kept the offense going as Perez doubled home Fitzgerald in the fifth and Rohan delivered a sac fly in the seventh. Perez added another RBI double later in the seventh for an 8-1 Chiefs lead. A Burlington error helped the Chiefs score twice in the eighth against reliever Scott Kelley. The Chiefs put the final touches on a 12 run outburst against Sam Runion in the ninth. Fitzgerald and Jonathon Mota each singled and scored on a line-drive single by Francisco Guzman for the 12-2 lead.

Burlington wouldn't go quietly as they scored five runs in the ninth off Jordan Latham and Frank Batista. After two singles started the inning, Oriental hit his third home run of the season to cut the Chiefs lead to 12-5. Latham walked to next two batters and Batista entered. He gave up a RBI single to Hilton Richardson and a sac fly to Gerard Hall before ending the game with consecutive strikeouts.

McNutt (6-0) struck out 10 and allowed just two baserunners on a walk and a single over five shutout innings. He leads the Midwest League with a 1.51 ERA and a 1.000 winning percentage while also ranking in the top 10 in wins and strikeouts. Yohan Gonzalez allowed two runs on three hits over 2 1/3 innings while striking out two and walking one. Jordan Latham allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits over 2/3 of an inning while striking out two and walking two. Batista struck out two and allowed a hit in one inning.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Trey McNutt (RHP) - The Chiefs ace improved to 6-0 with his second dominating performance against Burlington this season. He threw five scoreless innings and struck out 10 while allowing one hit and one walk. In 11 innings against Burlington this season he has recorded 17 strikeouts and not allowed a run.

Notes... Lee has a 10-game hit-streak, the longest for any Chiefs player this season...He also leads the team with 21 multi-hit games and a 20-game road on-base streak...Matt Cerda was 0-for-6 snapping an 11-game road hit streak...The last Chiefs starter to strike out 10 or more batters was Jeremy Papelbon on August 27, 2007 against Beloit at O'Brien Field...McNutt is 2-0 at Burlington this season with 11 shutout innings and 17 strikeouts...The Bees have five hits and three walks against him and have not gotten a runner past second base...Despite being shutout on Tuesday the Chiefs still pounded out 31 hits and scored 24 runs in the three-game series with a pair of 12 run games...Justin Bour missed his third straight game after being hit in the hand by a pitch on Sunday...Perez has struck out at least once in each of his last 12 starts dating back to May 23...The Chiefs end the first half with a 15-20 mark on the road...The Chiefs were 7-2 against Burlington in the first half...Peoria was shutout in both losses but outscored the Bees 54-26 in their seven victories...The Chiefs have Thursday off before opening a three-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits at 6:30 p.m. Friday night at O'Brien Field...There first 1200 fans will receive a Chiefs T-Shirt for Cubs/Cardinals Rivalry Night...Cubs fans can get a blue shirt with the current Chiefs logo while Cardinals fans get a red shirt with the old Chiefs logo on it...Friday is also Pink in the Park with a Jersey Auction to benefit Komen for the Cure...The night will end with a Pitch-In For Charity Tennis Ball Toss and a spectacular Fireworks Show presented by Methodist Medical Center...The Chiefs will start RH Ryan Searle (2-1, 4.42) against RH Eric Fornataro (5-4, 3.71)...The broadcast can be heard starting with the pregame show at 6:15 p.m. on 96.5 ESPN and www.peoriachiefs.com.
