Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Clinton LumberKings 7-2 on Wednesday night at Alliant Energy Field. Jake Odorizzi and three Wisconsin relievers combined to strikeout 12 LumberKings batters. Cameron Garfield drove in three runs as the Rattlers knocked Clinton out of the first half Western Division playoff picture.
The LumberKings (35-30) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Franklin walked to start the inning. He moved to second on a wild throw to first that was an attempt to double him off second after a flyball to center. A grounder to first sent Franklin to third base. Tim Morris drove in Franklin with a single.
Kentrail Davis tied the game in the top of the third inning with an RBI single. D'Vontrey Richardson singled with two outs and none on base. Cutter Dykstra drew a walk. Davis followed with a single to center. Richardson crossed home plate just before Dykstra was thrown out at third base.
Clinton had a chance to go in front in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Cerione tripled with one out. Wisconsin played their infield in to try to cut down the run at the plate and it worked. Odorizzi got Steve Baron to send a grounder to Michael Marseco at short. The throw home was in plenty of time to get Cerione. Odorizzi struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Marseco used his bat to put the Rattlers (24-41) in front. Erik Miller started Wisconsin with a double in the top of the fifth. Kyle Dhanani sacrificed Miller to third. Marseco dropped a perfect suicide squeeze bunt with Miller charging from third. The only play for Clinton was to first base and Wisconsin had a 2-1 lead after Miller crossed home plate.
The Rattlers tacked on another run in the sixth on an RBI grounder by Garfield.
Odorizzi allowed that first inning run and that was it. He tossed five innings, gave up four hits, and struck out five before turning the game over to the Wisconsin bullpen in the sixth.
Santo Manzanillo tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Then, Jeremy Jeffress pitched two scoreless and hitless innings. The radar gun in the ballpark registered one pitch from the right-hander at 99 mph as he struck out Vinnie Catricala in the eighth inning. Jeffress struck out five and walked one in his relief stint.
The Rattlers put the game away in the top of the eighth inning with a four run outburst. Garfield knocked in a pair with a double. Two runs score on an error after a hard hit ball by Richardson.
Andy Sauter allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out a pair as he recorded the final three outs in Wisconsin's second straight victory.
The final game of the series is Thursday night. Del Howell (0-2, 6.68) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Erasmo Ramirez (5-2, 2.43) is set to start for Clinton. Game time at Alliant Energy Field is 7:00pm. You may tune in for all the action on AM1280, WNAM beginning with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40 pm.
