Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Right-handed pitcher Jordan Smith, a key member of the 2007 Dayton Dragons, made his Major League debut last night with the Cincinnati Reds, becoming the 43rd former Dragons player to play in the big leagues.

Smith pitched one inning for the Reds in their loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Great American Ballpark and worked a scoreless frame, allowing one hit.

Smith, 24, went 10-8 with a 3.84 earned run average as a starting pitcher for the '07 Dragons, helping the team to the Eastern Division First Half title and into the Midwest League playoffs with a 78-62 record. Among his teammates on the 2007 club were outfielders Drew Stubbs and Chris Heisey, and third baseman Juan Francisco, all of whom have played for the Reds this season. He led the pitching staff with 26 starts that season. Smith was the Reds sixth round draft pick in 2006 out of the College of Southern Nevada.

Smith was converted from starter to reliever earlier this season. With Double-A Carolina (Southern League) in 2010, he went 1-3 with nine saves and a 5.08 earned run average. He had allowed just one run in his last six games covering eight innings.

Other former Dragons to reach the Major Leagues this season include pitchers Logan Ondrusek and Enerio Del Rosario and outfielder Chris Heisey (all with the Reds).

There are 11 current members of the Reds who played for the Dragons. They include pitchers Homer Bailey, Johnny Cueto, and Logan Ondrusek; catcher Ryan Hanigan; infielders Paul Janish and Joey Votto; and outfielders Jay Bruce, and Chris Dickerson, along with Smith, Heisey, and Stubbs. Bailey, Hanigan, and Dickerson are on the disabled list.

The Dragons, winners of four straight games, play at Fort Wayne tonight at 7:05 p.m. (WING 1410 AM). They begin a three-game series at Fifth Third Field in Dayton on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. against the Great Lakes Loons.
