Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

It was a bittersweet night for the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday night as they saw their 19-game home winning streak snapped by the Beloit Snappers, 8-6, but qualified for the MWL playoffs as third place Clinton lost to Wisconsin, 8-1. The Kernels had not lost at home since April 28, a 12-2 loss to Clinton.

The Snappers scored six runs in the second inning off Kernels starter Ariel Pena (1-2) with the big blow, a three run homer by Michael Gonzalez. That lead was almost not enough for starter Miguel Munoz (3-5) as he held the Kernels to two runs on seven hits over 5 IP.

The Kernels cut the lead to 6-5 with a three run sixth inning. Beloit picked up two important insurance runs in the top of the eighth as the Kernels scored a run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth, but left the sacks full as Kane Holbrooks got Justin Bass to ground out to end the game, and earn his ninth save.

Jean Segura led the Kernels, going 3-4 with an RBI as Mike Trout was 2-5 with a double and RBI and Jeremy Cruz went 2-4 with a double and RBI. Aaron Hicks and James Beresford both had three hits for the Snappers.

This is the fourth year in a row the Kernels have qualified for the MWL Playoffs and the second year they qualified in the first half. They still lead Quad Cities by 2.5 games in the chase for the MWL West first half championship with their Magic Number at 3. The Kernels 19 game home winning streak is a club and MWL record as they are 23-5 at home and 41-22 overall.

It's a Mix 96.5 FM / WMT AM 600 Winning Wednesday and noon game when the Kernels take on the Snappers at 12:05 pm. A lucky fan, age 18 and older, will win $10,000 if the Kernels perform a certain feat in the correct inning. Gates open at 11:00 am.

Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Wednesday. The current home stand continues through Sunday, June 20th.
