Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Everett Williams delivered a run-scoring single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Wednesday night. The Dragons saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with the loss.
Fort Wayne's James Darnell led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right center field against Dragons reliever Blair Carson (1-3). Carson's wild pitch moved Darnell to third with no one out. Nate Freiman walked. Edinson Rincon popped out to short for the first out of the inning, but Williams followed with a hard ground ball through the middle to bring in Darnell and give Fort Wayne a 5-4 lead.
Nick Schumacher pitched a perfect ninth inning for Fort Wayne for his 13th save. TinCaps relievers worked the final four innings and allowed just one base runner.
The game was tightly-contested throughout. Neither team led by more than one run and both teams led on at least two occasions.
Fort Wayne scored one run against Dragons starting pitcher Josh Ravin in the bottom of the second to take a brief 1-0 lead. The Dragons answered in the third with two runs of their own. Chase Weems started the rally with a single to left. He went to second on a ground out, to third on a single by Ryan LaMarre, and scored on Henry Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to tie the game. LaMarre scored on a double to left by Chris Richburg to give Dayton a 2-1 lead.
Fort Wayne tied the game in the bottom of the third on a lead-off home run by Edinson Rincon against Dayton's J.C. Sulbaran. They grabbed the lead in the fourth, taking advantage of three walks in the inning by Sulbaran, to score one run and jump ahead 3-2.
But the Dragons answered with two runs in the fifth. Weems led off with a double to right and with one out, LaMarre was hit by a pitch. Rodriguez doubled off the right field fence as Weems scored. LaMarre scored on Shane Carlson's sacrifice fly to give Dayton a 4-3 lead.
Fort Wayne's Danny Payne belted a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4, setting up Williams' big hit in the eighth.
The Dragons finished with eight hits. Chase Weems was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Henry Rodriguez was 1 for 3 with two runs batted in.
Dayton (28-37) will wrap up the series in Fort Wayne on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Justin Walker (1-8, 5.32) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's John Hussey (4-3, 6.35).
