Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Beloit Snappers decided to take batting practice when they arrived at Perfect Game Field before Wednesday's noon game with the Cedar Rapids Kernels as they pounded out 14 hits in an 11-2 romp over the Kernels. Beloit scored six runs in the second inning as Anderson Hidalgo and Danny Rams both homered.
Rams finished the day 2-5 with 4 RBI and Hidalgo went 3-4 with three runs scored. Kernels starter Tyler Skaggs (5-3) was roughed up for eight runs on 10 hits over four innings of work. The Kernels had a hard time finding the plate at times, as they issued eight walks, but struck out 11 Beloit batters with Tyler Kehrer striking out eight over four innings of relief.
The Kernels scored single runs in the sixth and seventh inning on an RBI single by Casey Haerther and RBI double by Jose Jimenez. Haerther went 2-4 and was the only Kernel with more than one hit as the Kernels were held to just six hits.
Beloit starter Brad Stillings (6-3) allowed a run on three hits and struck out three over 5.1 innings for the win. The Kernels have been outscored 38-17 by opponents in the second inning this season, and have outscored opponents 78-21 in the sixth inning.
Today's loss cuts the Kernels lead over second place Quad Cities to two games with five games remaining in the first half. The Kernels Magic Number to clinch their first outright division championship since 2002 is three as the Kernels hold the tie breaker with Quad Cities based on head-to-head runs scored.
The Kernels will look to get back to their winning ways at Perfect Game Field on Thursday night as former West Delaware HS prep star, B.J. Hermsen, is scheduled to pitch for Beloit. Gates open at 5:30 pm on a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday. Twelve ounce draft beer is $1.50 and bottled soda and water is just two dollars. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
Tickets may be ordered on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Thursday. The current home stand continues through Sunday, June 20th.
