Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks took on the Quad City Mallards Friday night at Independence Events Center. The Mallards scored three goals in the first period and fought off a valiant comeback attempt by the Mavericks to win, 4-3. Two goals by Mike McLean and 38 saves by Adam Russo were enough to seal away the Mallards' victory and hand the Mavericks their second straight loss, dropping the Mavericks to 10-7-1 on the season. Quad City moved back to the .500 mark, improving their record to an even 10-10-0 in their inaugural season in the Central Hockey League (CHL).

The first time the two teams met, the Mallards scored on their first shot. In the teams' second meeting, the Mallards scored on their second shot of the game. A pass from Obi Aduba found Zach Pearson in the slot, who in turn fired a shot on net that trickled past Gerry Festa, giving Quad City the early 1-0 lead. Quad City's assault continued on the Mavs as Mike McLean scored on the power play on an assist from Joel Gasper. Missouri goaltender Gerry Festa was pulled just eight minutes into the game after giving up two goals on five shots and was relieved by Rob Nolan. Unnerved by the goaltending change, Quad City put yet another goal on the scoreboard as McLean scored his second goal of the game while the Mavericks were on the power play, giving Quad City the 3-0 lead. The goal was the first shorthanded goal given up this season by the Mavericks. The Mallards' three-goal period was just the second time the Mavericks had allowed a trio of goals in the first period. Quad City outshot Missouri 10-8 in the period.

The Mavericks narrowed the Mallards' lead 10 minutes into the second period as rookie forward Walker Wintoneak continued his meteoric rise with his seventh goal of the season on a pass from former NHL player Ryan Jardine. Ray DiLauro got the second assist on the goal. Jardine found his way back on to the score sheet with a minute and a half left in the second period when he planted a rebound from Bill Vandermeer in the back of the net. Olivier Filion was credited with an assist on the goal as well. Rob Nolan stopped all nine Mallard shots in the second period to keep the game close. Adam Russo mustered just 10 saves on 12 Missouri shots.

The torrid pace would continue into the third period as the Mavs and Mallards fought tooth and nail to the final horn. Seven minutes into the final period, Quad City extended its lead to two goals on a Kevin Jarman goal. Assists went to Brandon Marino and Tyler Kindle. The Mavericks fought their way back into the game, as Ray DiLauro snuck a puck over Russo's short side shoulder to cut the Mallards' lead in half with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation. The Mavericks came up short in the end, as the Mallards went on to a 4-3 victory. Adam Russo was spectacular in between the nets for Quad City, stopping 38 of 41 shots. Rob Nolan finished the night with 16 saves on 18 shots.

The Mavericks could not capitalize on their power play opportunities, finishing zero-for-five with a man advantage. The Mallards' power play unit was a force to be reckoned with all night as Quad City would score two goals on five power play attempts.

The Missouri Mavericks are right back on the ice tomorrow night when they face the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:05pm at Independence Events Center. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game.
