Dayton Gems News Release

Bloomington, IL-Looking to continue their winning ways against the PrairieThunder, the Dayton Gems made their second trip of the 2010-2011 season to Bloomington on Friday night. Attempting to get back into the win column after a 5-2 loss to Rapid City on Thursday night, the Gems had opportunities early including two first period power plays. Bloomington got on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 6:12 mark from Garrett Klotz. Dayton managed to battle back and square the game at the 12:48 mark in the first on a penalty shot scored by Gems forward Kyle Bochek. Moments before the end of the first period Bloomington retook the lead on a shorthanded goal from Travis Granbois. Even though the Gems matched the PrairieThunder in the shot category, the Gems could not find an equalizer.

The second period for the Gems was a tough one, losing further ground to the PrairieThunder. At the 14:19 mark in the second, the PrairieThunder extended their first period lead on a goal scored by Bloomington defensemen, Alan Mazur. Bloomington not satisfied with just a two goal advantage, the PrairieThunder added to their lead over the Gems putting home a power play goal at the 16:42 mark. Bloomington's power play goal added by forward Bill Bagron help pushed the PrairieThunders lead to 4-1 going into the second intermission. Dayton had opportunities to cut into Bloomington's lead in the second, outshooting the PrairieThunder 12-11 in the period.

Dayton cuts into Bloomington's 4-1 lead early into the third period. Gems forward Brett Lutes added an unassisted goal at the 1:06 mark into the third period to cut Bloomington's lead to 4-2. Lutes' goal helped give the Gems the early momentum in the third only to be undone by Bill Bagron's second goal at the 14:03 mark in the third to push the PrairieThunder back out in front by three goals. Bagron's second goal put the game out of reach, even though the Gems suffered its first defeat to Bloomington this season the Gems did outshoot Bloomington 30-27. One crucial factor to the Gems three goal defeat was the Gems inability to capitalize on the power play. The Gems finished the game 0 for 5 on the power play, while Bloomington managed to put one home on their power play opportunities (1 for 4).

The Gems next travel to Mississippi for the first time this season to continue their season long five game road trip (they are currently 3-4 in seven road games this season).
