Marlies Sign Josh Engel to SPC

Jeff Jackson, General Manager of the Toronto Marlies, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Josh Engel to a standard player's contract.

Engel, 24, has appeared in 12 games with the Marlies this season collecting one goal and four assists with 10 penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating. Engel recorded his first career AHL goal on February 18 against the Syracuse Crunch in the Marlies 8-5 win. Engel was originally signed by the Marlies to a professional try-out contract on February 10, 2009.

Engel appeared in 36 games earlier this season with the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. Engel collected two goals and 12 assists for 14 points with Gwinnett this season and 12 penalty minutes.

The Rice Lake, Wisconsin native played in four games with the Providence Bruins earlier this season, collecting zero points and two penalty minutes. In 2007-08, he played in three games with the Albany River Rats, including one playoff contest. He recorded his first career AHL point (assist) during the regular season with the River Rats.

The Marlies play the Syracuse Crunch - AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets - tonight at the Oncenter at 7:00 p.m. The Marlies host the Lake Erie Monsters on Saturday and the Manitoba Moose on Sunday; with both games starting at 4:00 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum.
