Iowa Chops News Release

What a game, what a win! Thanks to a 3rd period goal by Ryan Dingle, a 1st period goal from Brendan Mikkelson, and 23 saves from David LeNeveu the Iowa Chops posted their first win this season in Chicago against the Wolves, 2-1. The win draws the Iowa Chops to within three points of the fourth and final playoff spot held by the Wolves.

From the start, the Chops motive was clear... good puck decisions, a good forecheck and solid defense. The Chops got all three. The Chops outshot the Wolves in all three periods and it began with a 10-7 edge in the 1st period, which was highlighted by a 3 on 2 goal as Brendan Mikkelson took a pass on the backdoor from Ajay Baines to slip it past Wolves goalie Ondrej Pavelec for a 1-0 lead. Adrian Veideman, who started the rush, also assisted on the goal.

The 2nd period was largely controlled by the Chops, but the Wolves were kept in the game by Pavelec, who stopped both Matt Beleskey and TJ Trevelyan on point-blank chances. The Wolves drew even at 1-1, as Riley Holzapfel got free and fired a snapshot over the left shoulder of Chops goalie David LeNeveu. However, that would be all that LeNeveu and the Chops would surrender on this night.

The 3rd period was the most physical of the game with both teams enjoying some quality chances. The Chops took the lead thanks to some hard work by former Chicago Wolves forward Chad Painchaud, who won a puck battle deep in the Wolves zone and sent the puck out front to Ryan Dingle. Dingle's first chance was denied by Pavelec, but Dingle stayed with the rebound to slip home a backhand to give the Chops the lead for good. Ajay Baines also assisted, posting his third point in his last two games. The Wolves pulled Pavelec late in the 3rd period, but LeNeveu and the Chops defense shut down Chicago to post the 2-1 win in regulation.

The win give the Chops 66 points and they now sit three points behind the Wolves 69 points for the fourth and final playoff spot. The two teams will battle again in Chicago on Friday, March 13th at 7:30pm.
