Marietti & Abbott Recognized by Charleston Metro Sports Council

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Assistant Coach Brett Marietti and Director of Public Relations and Broadcasting Darren Abbott both received honors at last night's Charleston Metro Sports Council's Fourth Annual Awards Dinner. Marietti received Charleston Professional Athlete of the Year for 2003, while Abbott was named Charleston Sports Business Professional of the Year for 2003. The event was held at the North Charleston Coliseum Convention Center and included over 300 attendees.

"It was certainly and honor to be recognized on an evening where so many other great athlete's, coaches and sports professionals in the Lowcountry received honors," explained Marietti.

Brett Marietti is currently an assistant coach with the Stingrays. He finished his career in 2003 having played exclusively with the Stingrays since 1994. He played 550 games with the Rays and racked up 481 points on 194 goals and 287 assists. The native of Haileybury, Ontario is also the all-time franchise leader in penalty minutes with 1,127.

"It is truly an honor to have two people from the Stingrays representing two very different components of our organization recognized for their accomplishments," Noted Stingrays President Taylor Lee. "To have Brett Marietti and Darren Abbott honored by the Charleston Metro Sports Council with the likes of Pat Conroy, John Kresse, and John McKissick speaks volumes about both of their accomplishments on and off the ice. On behalf of the SC Stingrays we are honored!"

Darren Abbott is now in his fifth season as Voice of the Stingrays. This summer he was honored as the ECHL Broadcaster of the Year for the 2003 season. Abbott also received the ECHL Public Relations Award in 2000 and 2001, making him the first repeat winner in league history. Darren's career has also included two visits to the ECHL All Star Game.

Abbott is also the host of the Lowcountry Sports Scene; a half hour television show which is now in is second season airing on Comcast 28.

The Stingrays drop the puck on the second half of the season tomorrow night, (January 24, 2004) against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:30 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
