Grrrowl Break Streak with 3-2 Win in Columbia
January 23, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release
COLUMBIA, SC: The Greenville Grrrowl definitely had a new look when they made the trip to Columbia on Friday night to take on the Inferno after a six-day break for the ECHL All-Star game. Three new faces, combined with four players on the injured reserve list, the Grrrowl exploded out of the blocks to take an early lead over the top team in the Southern Division of the Eastern Conference. Greenville held on for the 3-2 road win, the first since December 26, 2003.
The newest member of the Grrrowl, JEREMY KYTE, arrived in Greenville an hour before the team left for Columbia, and he jumped out of the bus and scored his seventh goal of the season just 2:58 into the opening period. Dagenais and Demarski assisted the power-play tally, and the Grrrowl led 1-0. The Inferno tied the score at the 7:40 mark on a BARRIE MOORE goal. JOHN NAIL (from Ilijow and LaChapelle) and TROY ILIJOW (from Jeff Zehr) added back-to-back scores to give the Grrrowl a 3-1 lead at intermission.
The only offense of the second period came off the stick of Columbia's DENNIS VIAL, which cut the Grrrowl lead to one goal, 3-2, after two frames.
Both teams remained scoreless in the final period, and Greenville won for the first time since January 3rd, a stretch of seven games. The Grrrowl had been 0-6-1 in the last seven, but improve to 7-29-3 on the season.
The Grrrowl will continue the stretch of road games by visiting Charlotte on Saturday night to face the Checkers. This will be the fourth road game of a nine-game string with the Grrrowl away from Greenville.
