Lowell Splits for Second Straight Week

Wednesday, W-B/Scranton 5 vs. DEVILS 0

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton netminder Adam Berkhoel led the Penguins to their first shutout this season, making 46 saves in a 5-0 decision over the Lowell Devils at the Tsongas Arena. After a scoreless first period, the Penguins broke the game open as Jeff Taffe scored twice and Chris Minard also lit the lamp over a span of 4:22 in the second. Luca Caputi capped off the frame with a goal that put the Penguins up 4-0 with 1:14 until the break. The Penguins would tack on one more in the third off the stick of Janne Pesonen. Lowell went 0-for-9 on the power play in the loss.

Saturday, Devils 4 vs. SPRINGFIELD 2

The Devils rallied for a 4-2 win versus the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center. Assistant captain Pascal Rheaume led the offense with a goal and two assists in the game. After ending the first period in a 1-1 tie, the Devils would dominate the second by getting three pucks by goalie Devan Dubnyk. Rheaume would strike first, breaking the tie with a deflection off a shot by Vladamir Zharkov. Matt Halischuk then gathered his fifth goal of the season at 5:53, while Matt Corrente picked up his first goal of the year at 13:14 to build a 4-1 Devils lead. G Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves on the night for his third win of the season.

In the Standings

After the third week of the 2008-09 season, the Lowell Devils (3-2-0-1) are now in a three-way tie for third place in the Atlantic Division with the Springfield Falcons (3-3-1-0) and the Hartford Wolf Pack (3-3-0-1). The Portland Pirates have moved into the second place spot thanks to their 4-1-0-0 record, while the Providence Bruins still remain in first at 5-0-1-0. The Manchester Monarchs and the Worcester Sharks sit in a tie for fourth, both with a record of 2-4-0-0.

League Leaders

With a goal and an assist on Saturday against Springfield, Matt Halischuk has now totaled eight points (5g, 3a) over six games. He remains in the top spot for scoring among AHL rookies for the third consecutive week.

Around the Horns

The Devils are undefeated in regulation on the road at 2-0-0-1...The Devils have scored on the man-advantage in five out of the six games they've played this season. Matt Halischuk and Nicklas Bergfors lead Lowell with two power play goals each...Lowell collected a season-high 46 shots in their loss against W-B/Scranton on Wednesday...Pascal Rheaume recorded his first multi-point game of the season with a goal and two assists on Saturday against Springfield.

Coming Up

Lowell faces off against the Manchester Monarchs (2-4-0-0) for the third time this season on Wednesday at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Devils are currently 1-1-0-0 versus the Monarchs this season. The Monarchs have lost three of their last four since defeating the Devils, 6-4, on October 17. Manchester's penalty kill unit is clicking at 95.0% (19-for-20) over three home games.

Beginning on Friday, the Devils take the ice for a home-and-home series against the Springfield Falcons (3-3-1-0). Lowell will start things off at the MassMutual Center on Friday before returning home on Saturday to the Tsongas Arena. Including the Devils 4-2 win on Saturday over the Falcons, the two teams will have met three times in eight days. Springfield center Ryan Potulny has five goals in seven games this season.
