Houston Aeros News Release
THIS WEEK'S GAMES
The Aeros enter the week in fifth place in the West Division with eight points on a 4-3-0-0 record. Houston hosts the Iowa Chops for the first time ever Tuesday night followed by the Providence Bruins on Friday and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday afternoon.
Iowa's visit for the 7:05 p.m. Tuesday game will be the first of eight games against the Chops this season. The teams won't meet again until February when the clubs play five of their games. The Chops, with a record of 5-3-0-0, lead the Aeros by two points in the standings with one more game played. Iowa is averaging three goals-for and against per game while the Aeros are very close with 3.6 goals-for and 3.3 goals-against per game.
Friday's 7:35 p.m. game against the Providence Bruins marks only the sixth meeting in team history with the Aeros holding a 3-2-0-1 record. The Bruins are off to a 5-0-1-0 start and lead the Atlantic Division with 11 points. Providence has allowed only 14 goals against through six games, the second fewest in the AHL.
Goaltender Barry Brust leads Aeros' goaltenders with a record of 4-2-0, a 3.29 goals against average (GAA) and a .907 save percentage against the Bruins. Left wing Jason Ryznar leads Houston skaters with eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) in 19 games against Providence.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will make their first trip to Houston since the 2002-03 season for Sunday's 4:05 p.m. game. The Aeros and Penguins split that season series with each team winning on the road. The Penguins have a 3-3-0-1 record and are on a two game skid entering the week.
Jesse Schultz leads Aeros skaters with nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) in 12 games against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Brust is the only Aero goaltender with a game against the Penguins, a loss with only a 1.01 GAA and a .964 save percentage.
WEEK IN REVIEW
Houston lost all three games during the three-in-three weekend against the North Division. The Manitoba Moose won by two goals, 3-1 and 5-3 on Friday and Saturday night respectively. Each game was finished with an empty-net goal by the Moose as the Aeros tried to fight back with an extra attacker. The back-to-back losses to Manitoba snapped Houston's seven-game winning streak over the Moose.
Toronto jumped out to a three-goal lead early in the second period and allowed the Aeros to come back within one late in the game. Houston lost 5-4 despite having a 6-on-4 chance late in the contest. Sunday's loss in Toronto extended the Aeros winless streak to five games (0-4-1-0) against the Marlies.
Houston blocked a penalty-shot Sunday against Toronto during the third period. The last time an Aeros opponent had a penalty shot attempt was during the 2006-07 season on March 23, a missed attempt.
Houston has allowed only one penalty-shot goal in ten attempts in team history. That penalty-shot goal was November 13, 1997, the only attempt in Aeros history prior to joining the AHL. Houston has allowed nine attempts, all no-goals, since March 9, 2003.
