Last Week's Games
Friday, October 24th - Quad City Flames 4 at Rochester Americans 5
In their only visit to Rochester during the 2008-09 regular season, the Amerks handed the Flames a 5-4 defeat. After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for four goals in the second and a quartet of tallies in the third. In the loss, Adam Cracknell, David Van der Gulik, Kris Chucko and Dan Spang scored for Quad City. The teams skated scoreless through the first period thanks to excellent penalty killing and goaltending. The first great save of the game came during a Flames power play when Rochester's Janis Sprukts broke in for a breakaway. Leland Irving came up big as he denied Sprukts to keep the game scoreless. The Flames went 0-2 on the power play in the early part of the opening frame before Rochester failed to convert on three straight man advantages including 50 seconds of 5-on-3 time. The teams traded goals in an exciting second period. The action began at 7:55 of the frame when Adam Cracknell sent a shot from the slot past Rochester's Chris Beckford-Tseu for a power-play goal. The man advantage marker was assisted by Ander Eriksson and Dan Spang. Both rearguards recorded their first points as Flames on the tally. The Amerks struck back just 1:07 later when Shawn Matthias lifted a backhander into the Quad City net. Rochester capitalized on the momentum shift by scoring again just 20 seconds later. Drew Larman scored on the rebound following a shot by Tanner Glass. The tally gave Rochester a lead on home ice for the first time this season. The Americans held the lead for 4:02 before the Flames tied the game. Jamie Lundmark knocked down Amerks defenseman Keaton Ellerby to force a turnover. The veteran center found David Van der Gulik in front. The Flames winger tipped the puck home to tie the game at two. The scoring didn't slow down in the third period as the teams combined for five goals. Michael Duco put Rochester in front at 8:44 of the closing period when he scored his first goal of the season on a wraparound. The feisty winger's tally put the Amerks in front at 3-2. Kris Chucko potted his team-leading fourth goal of the season by jamming a rebound past Beckford-Tseu at 12:14 of the third. The even strength tally tied the game at three. Rochester re-took the lead on a goal by Kendal McArdle just 28 seconds after Chucko's tally. McArdle tipped a shot off the stick of Drew Larman past Irving for his first goal of the year. Karl Stewart extended the lead by scoring a power-play goal on a blast from the slot with just 2:54 remaining. The Flames threatened late and scored once with the sixth attacker as Dan Spang netted his first goal following a cross-ice feed from Kris Chucko. Despite Spang's tally, the Flames could not overcome the late deficit as Rochester earned their first win of the season.
Saturday, October 25th - Quad City Flames 3 at Toronto Marlies 1
The Flames earned their first road win of the year on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Toronto Marlies 3-1. Matt Keetley made 27 saves in the win including 11 stops in the final period. David Van der Gulik, Jamie Lundmark and Warren Peters supplied the offense as the team improved to 2-4-1-0 on the season. Quad City controlled the opening stanza as the Flames limited Toronto's even strength chances while taking a 1-0 lead. David Van der Gulik scored during a Flames power play off a feed from Kris Chucko. The goal was Van der Gulik's second tally in as many games and the Flames' first opening period goal of the season. A pair of late Toronto power plays failed to produce a goal as the Flames completed the opening 20 minutes with a 1-0 edge. Quad City increased their edge to 2-0 at 6:58 of the second period when Jamie Lundmark netted his first goal of the year during a Flames man advantage. Kris Chucko attempted a centering pass for Kyle Greentree that was deflected off a Marlie straight to Lundmark. The veteran center made no mistake and he buried the puck past Toronto's Justin Pogge to give the Flames a 2-0 lead. Quad City took a 3-0 lead just 49 seconds later when Brett Sutter sent a saucer pass through the Marlies defense to spring Warren Peters on a late developing breakway. The captain recorded his first goal of the year on the chance as he beat Pogge with a backhander. Matt Keetley made his best save of the contest in the late stages of the second period when he slid across his crease to deny Toronto's Boyd Devereaux during a shorthanded 2-on-1 break for the Marlies. The fantastic stop was one of Keetley's seven saves during the middle frame. The Marlies netted the only goal of the closing frame when Andre Deveaux scored on a feed from Kris Newbury following a Flames turnover. With the exception of the Deveaux marker, Keetley held the fort in the third as he turned aside 11 shots in the closing frame. Keetley denied Toronto's Jiri Tlusty on the best chance of the period as the skilled forward was robbed on a chance from point-blank range.
Sunday, October 26th - Quad City Flames 2 at Hamilton Bulldogs 0
Quad City wrapped up a four-game road trip with a 2-0 win in Hamilton on Sunday afternoon. Matt Keetley stopped 32 shots en route to his second career shutout. Warren Peters and Kyle Greentree provided the offense with goals in the final period. Matt Keetley held the 'Dogs at bay in the opening period as he stopped 16 shots. The second-year netminder tied a franchise record for first period saves including a spectacular stop on a Matt D'Agostini chance in the final minute of the first frame. The 'Dogs offense was powered by four power-play chance while the Flames did not receive a single man advantage. Despite the lopsided play, the game remained scoreless after one period. Play evened out in the second period, but netminders continued to rule the day. Keetley made 12 second period saves while Hamilton's Marc Denis stopped 11 Quad City shots. Neither side was able to convert on their attempts and the game remained scoreless after 40 minutes. The Flames controlled the third period to earn their second consecutive road victory. Quad City outshot the Bulldogs 12-4 and scored twice. Warren Peters recorded his second goal in as many games when he riffled a shot past Denis from the right wing circle. Brett Sutter earned the primary assist on the goal after hard work along the wing won the puck free. Kyle Greentree added an insurance tally when he sent al rebound into the Hamilton net for his first goal as a Flame.
