Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY- All but one Louisville batter hit safely, but they weren't able to outscore Charlotte and lost 4-2 on Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
Louisville broke the ice in the second inning, when four straight singles plated two runs with RBI-knocks from Trey Amburgey and freshly-minted Louisville Bat, Byrd Tenerowicz.
The runs highlighted an existing theme of production from the bottom third of the Louisville lineup. Over the past five games, hitters in the 7, 8, and 9 spots of the Louisville lineup have combined to hit .456 (26-for-57) and have produced a total of 18 RBIs.
After reaching base by walk in the fourth, Knights' outfielder Adam Haseley swiped second base and took third on a throwing error. He was brought home when Romy Gonzalez grounded out to short, cutting the Bats lead to 2-1.
Charlotte made it a new ball game in the sixth when Seby Zavala lined a double into left field, scoring Romy Gonzalez and tying the game at 2-2.
Each club had great outings from their starters, with Charlotte hurler John Parke (2-5, 6.87) working seven innings, allowing nine hits and two runs, and Louisville starter Deck McGuire (0-1, 4.91) getting through 5.2 innings and allowing just three hits and a pair of runs (only one was earned) before running into trouble in the sixth. Reiver Sanmartin would enter the game and strike out Blake Rutherford to end the sixth-inning threat.
The deadlock lasted until the eighth inning, when Charlotte's Blake Rutherford scorched a double that bounced off the center field wall, plating two runs to give the Knights a 4-2 lead.
Louisville threatened in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with only one out, but a pop up in foul ground and a groundout ended the Louisville hopes of a comeback.
Game four of the six game set is scheduled for Friday night (June 10) at Louisville Slugger FIeld with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Justin Nicolino (0-1, 17.36) will get the ball for Louisville, while righty Brody Koerner (0-4, 7.50) will be on the bump for Charlotte.
