
Jacksonville Offense Quiet in Loss to Gwinnett

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite two hits from Erik González, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp offense was held quiet as they tallied just five hits in a 5-1 loss to the Gwinnett Stripers Thursday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Gwinnett (29-28) drew first blood against Jacksonville in the top of the second inning. With one out, Joe Dunand worked a walk against Jumbo Shrimp starter Matthew Kent (L, 2-5). Hernán Pérez singled, putting runners on first and second. Greyson Jenista was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ryan Casteel followed with a ground-rule double plating Dunand and Pérez to put the Stripers ahead 2-0. Jenista advanced to third on the double and with runners at second and third, Kramer Robertson singled, scoring Jenista to give Gwinnett a 3-0 advantage.
Jacksonville (29-28) was able to get a run back in the bottom of the third. With one out, Santiago Chavez reached on a fielder's choice and went to third on a double from Bryson Brigman. During the at-bat of Peyton Burdick, Chavez scored on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Stripers added one run in the sixth to retake a three-run advantage. Preston Tucker (4) led off the inning with a solo home run, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Gwinnett plated their final run in the top of the ninth against Jacksonville reliever Robert Garcia. With one out, Ryan Casteel (5) blasted a solo home run, pushing the Stripers lead to 5-1.
The Jacksonville bullpen held strong in the middle innings. Andrew Nardi contributed 1.1 perfect innings with two strikeouts. Zach Pop tossed one scoreless inning, adding one strikeout against one walk and one hit.
The Jacksonville-Gwinnett series continues Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET. RHP Elieser Hernandez (0-0, 0) will make his first start for Jacksonville in 2022, and RHP Bryce Elder (2-2, 5.40) gets the ball for Gwinnett. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. ET on ESPN 690, espn690.com.
