Logue, Bullpen Shutdown Mets in 3-1 Win
August 20, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The best way to counter a red-hot team is a great pitching performance and the Bisons got just that from Zach Logue and a quartet of relievers on Friday night.
Herd hurlers struck out nine and allowed multiple baserunners in an inning just once as they shutdown the Mets, 3-1, from NBT Bank Stadium, ending Syracuse's seven-game win streak. The victory helped Buffalo keep their slim half-game lead over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for first place in the Northeast division.
Logue set the tone early, striking out the first two batters of the game and retiring six of the first eight he faced. Then, after a two-out single from Wilfredo Tovar in the third inning gave Syracuse their only run, the southpaw held the Mets hitless into the sixth inning.
In all, Logue allowed just three hits and just one base runner past second base in improving to 6-2 on the season.
The bullpen picked up right where Logue left off to seal the win. Dany Jimenez came in in the sixth and struck out both batters he faced and rehabbing Blue Jays reliever A.J. Cole worked around a two-out triple to pitch a scores seventh inning. Carl Edwards Jr. needed just 10 pitches to record a fly out and a pair of punchouts in the eighth.
After Bryan Baker allowed a lead off single to David Thompson in the bottom of the ninth inning, the righty needed just seven pitches to retire the next three batters for his ninth save of the season.
The Bisons got all the offense they would need in the third inning thanks to an RBI single from Forrest Wall and a sac fly from Tyler White. The Herd then took advantage of a Syracuse fielding error on a potential doubleplay ball in the fourth to plate another run on a Richard Urena double.
As the teams enter the weekend, the Bisons can even up the shortened five-game series on Saturday night. Thomas Hatch (1-3, 3.11) gets the start for the Herd with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch from Syracuse.
