Iowa Cubs News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The Iowa Cubs (40-52) allowed seven runs in the late innings to fall to the St. Paul Saints (51-41) by a score of 9-4, Thursday at CHS Field.
The Saints took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI doubles from Mark Contreras and Gilberto Celestino. Beau Burrows kept Iowa off the board until the fourth inning, when they did all of their damage.
Abiatal Avelino got the I-Cubs on the board with a two-RBI single, followed by a double from Ian Miller that also brought in two. Matt Swarmer held the Saints offense in check, allowing just the two runs until the bottom of the sixth inning.
On a bases-loaded, 3-2 pitch from Swarmer, Drew Maggi hit a grand slam to give St. Paul a 6-4 lead. They added three more runs in the seventh when Contreras hit an RBI single followed by a two-RBI single from Sherman Johnson.
Ian Gibaut, Yennier Cano and Ian Hamilton combined to strike out seven batters over the final four frames to keep the lead intact, securing a 9-4 win for the Saints.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Ian Miller went 2-for-4 with a double tonight, the only I-Cub hitter to record a multi-hit game.
- Greg Deichmann went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts from the leadoff spot in his first start since being optioned to Iowa tonight.
- In his I-Cubs debut, Erich Uelmen allowed three earned runs on three hits while striking out two batters over two innings of work.
