Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, OHIO - Max Kranick tossed his first Triple-A quality start as the Indianapolis Indians pitching staff combined for a shutout of the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday night, 5-0.
Kranick (W, 2-3) shut down the Mud Hens offense in 6.0 innings for the team's first quality start since Beau Sulser on Aug. 3 at Iowa. It was Kranick's longest outing since July 21, 2019 with High-A Bradenton at Tampa (6.0ip).
Pirates rehabber Sam Howard entered in relief of Kranick and threw 2.0 perfect innings before Tyler Bashlor slammed the door. After Bashlor surrendered a one-out walk, the game ended with a sharp line drive caught by Cole Tucker that doubled off the runner at first.
Scoreless through the first four innings, a three-run fifth inning lifted the Indians (44-49) to their first win of the series. Christian Bethancourt kicked things off with his 10th home run of the season out to right field on the first pitch of the inning. With two runners on and two outs after the inning was extended via Isaac Paredes' first of two errors on the evening, Jared Oliva tripled to extend the lead, 3-0.
Another costly Toledo (52-41) error in the eighth inning led to another run tacked on without a hit recorded in the frame. Oliva drove in his third RBI of the night on a single in the ninth inning.
Two errors and a passed ball led to four of the Indians five runs being unearned to Toledo's pitching staff. Pedro Payano (L, 2-5) went 6.2 innings and surrendered three runs (one earned) on five hits.
The Indians and Mud Hens will continue the six-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 PM ET. RHP Beau Sulser (5-5, 4.50) will take the mound against RHP Mark Leiter Jr. (5-2, 3.86).
