Lemtyugov and Jonas Help Rivermen Win in Shootout

November 28, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, Il - Jonas Junland scored twice in regulation and Nikolay Lemtyugov scored twice in the shootout to give the Peoria Rivermen a 5-4 victory over the Rockford IceHogs on Friday night in front of 5,043 fans at Carver Arena. It was the first shootout of the season for the Rivermen in their 20th game.

The Rivermen withstood a pair of IceHogs' comebacks and a barrage of shots in the third period to get to overtime and eventually the shootout. Ben Bishop made 35 saves, including 15 in the third period alone, and another four in the shootout to secure the win.

While the IceHogs came into the game with the league's best power-play percentage it was the Rivermen who finished 3-for-6 on the man advantage. Rockford was held to just a 1-for-5 mark.

Junland's goal at 9:07 of the first period opened the scoring and a stretch of 4:20 in which the teams would trade two goals a piece. With two men in the penalty box, the Rivermen needed just 16 seconds to work the puck to Junland for a one-timer from just above the right circle. Julian Talbot and Lemtyugov earned assists on Junland's third goal of the season.

A pair of newcomers scored their first goals with Peoria as Ross Carlson and Josh Soares both put themselves on the score sheet. Carlson, who signed a PTO with the Rivermen before Wednesday's game, ripped a wrist shot past Annti Niemi at 11:15 of the first to increase the Rivermen lead to 2-0.

At 12:05 the game took its first drastic turn. Pete MacArthur slid the puck from the side of the net onto the stick of Petri Kontiola who beat Bishop along the ice. It was MacArthur again involved with tying the game at 13:27 when his dump-in took a fortuitous bounce. As he attempted to wrap the puck around the glass, it hit an edge of the zamboni-entrance door and caromed right back onto his stick. Bishop, anticipating the initial shot, went behind his net and couldn't get back in time before MacArthur had tied the game.

The second period belonged to Peoria as they notched the only two goals of the frame. It was Junland again, on the power play, rifling a slapshot past Niemi at 12:45 to give the Rivermen back the lead. Soares and Andy Wozniewski were involved in working the puck to Junland just inside the blue line and Ryan Reaves provided the screen.

Soares then found the back of the net at 16:58, on the power-play, after a Reaves drop pass created enough space for him to walk in towards the goal. He beat Niemi on the short-side and gave the Rivermen back their two-goal lead.

Rockford peppered Bishop with shots in the third period and out-shot Peoria 17-3 in the final frame of regulation. Jordan Hendry scored his first of the year at 4:58 to cut into the lead and Pascal Pelletier erased it completely at 14:40.

After a scoreless overtime Peoria found themselves in unfamiliar territory. Through the first five shooters, the two teams were tied at 2-2 with goals from Alexandre Imbeault and Lemtyugov for the Rivermen and Tim Brent and Mike Radja for the IceHogs. After Brent was stopped by Bishop on his second attempt, Lemtyugov ended the game by beating Niemi.

The two teams will change venues and face each other once again on Saturday night from the MetroCentre in Rockford. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on Hippie Radio 101.1FM as well as online through www.rivermen.net.

The Rivermen will return to Carver Arena on Friday, Dec. 5 to take on the Chicago Wolves and again on Saturday, Dec. 6 with the Quad City Flames in town. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Peoria Civic Center box office, by calling (309) 673-3200 or online at www.rivermen.net/tickets.
