Munroe Stifles Springfield Attack in 4-1 Win
November 28, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA -Scott Munroe made 33 saves in relief of injured starter Jean-Sebastien Aubin to backstop the Phantoms to a 4-1 win at the Wachovia Center on Friday night. A total of 27,507 fans came out to watch hockey in South Philadelphia on Black Friday, with 7,920 catching the Phantoms game after the Flyers played to a sellout crowd of 19,587 in their afternoon game against Carolina.
The Phantoms opened up the scoring at the 8:58 mark of the first period on DeSantis's first professional goal. Working with the man advantage, Claude Giroux found Patrick Maroon alone to the right of Falcons goalie Devan Dubnyk. Instead of firing a shot on net, Maroon fed DeSantis, who was streaking towards the crease from his defensive position. DeSantis fired a wrist shot under Dubnyk's blocker to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead.
With 3:56 remaining in the period, Springfield could not clear their own zone after killing off a penalty and Philadelphia capitalized to increase its lead to 2-0. Jonathan Matsumoto worked the puck to Danny Syvret at the top of the left side circle, who faked a shot before sliding a pass to Jeff Szwez in front. Szwez beat Dubnyk through the pads to double the lead.
The Falcons were able to get a goal back 11:17 into the second period. Mathieu Roy was deep in his zone when he sent an outlet pass to the stick of Derek Bekar along the left boards. After crossing the Phantoms blue line, he rifled a slap shot at the top of the left circle that snuck just beneath the crossbar above Munroe's blocker to make the score 2-1.
Philadelphia received an insurance marker while once again working with a man advantage. Giroux's slap shot from the top of the blue line sailed wide but came perfectly off the boards to Jared Ross to Dubnyk's left. Ross immediately put the puck in front, where Patrick Maroon was able to tip it through the legs of Dubnyk to increase the Phantoms lead to 3-1 with 3:52 to go in the second period. David Laliberte added an empty net goal at 19:57 of the third period.
Aubin started the game but left just 3:21 into the contest with a lower body injury. Munroe came in with an excellent performance and earned his eighth win of the season. Dubnyk finished the evening with 18 saves on 21 shots faced. The Phantoms scored on two of their seven opportunities on the power play while killing off all six Falcons chances with the man advantage.
The Phantoms travel to Hershey tomorrow night to face the Bears for the sixth time this month. They return home on Friday, December 5th to face the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:05 on Scout Night at the Wachovia Spectrum.
