Kowalski Called Up to AHL Syracuse

The Giwnnett Gladiators announced today that netminder Criag Kowalski has been called up to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. In addition, Gwinnett has signed forward Josh Bennett while Curtis Ryser as been added an an emergency back up goaltender for Gwinnett.

Kowalski was named the ECHL Goaltender of the week for last week posting a pair of wins over the Florida Everblades. After last night's 4-1 win over Columbia, he has won his last four starts for Gwinnett posting a 1.47 goals against average and a .953 save percentage during that span.

Selected in the eighth round (235th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2000 National Hockey League Draft, the 5-foot-8-inch and 190 Kowalski played three seasons for the Florida Everblades and was 54-25-10 with five shutouts and a 2.72 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage in 101 games.

Bennett appeared in two games last season with the Gladiators but did not register a point with Gwinnett. He posted 6 points off of 2 goals and 4 assists for Gwinnett during the 2005-06 season for Gwinnett in 33 games.

Bennett should be available for the Gladiators for tonight's 7:05 p.m. tilt in Augusta against the Lynx.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
