Salmon Kings Fall Short
December 15, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
The Salmon Kings traveled to Fresno on Friday night to take on the Falcons. Fresno had come in on a high winning their last six straight games. The Kings had won four of their last five.
Both teams came out with a lot of energy to start the game. Fresno was the first to capitalize, Tyler Kindle went top corner on Kings' goaltender Billy Thompson to stake the Falcons to a 1-0 lead. It appeared that the period would end that way, but Fresno capitalized off a faceoff with 2.8 seconds remaining to score as the buzzer sounded when a bouncing puck went off Oren Eizenman. The Falcons led 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period started out where the first began for the Salmon Kings with a dose of bad luck. A shorthanded breakaway by Fresno's Kenny Bernard bounced off the post, but was ruled a goal and the Falcons led 3-0. They extended the lead to 4-0 when Brady Leisenring scored. The Kings had some great chances during a couple of 5-3 power play opportunities, but Fresno goaltender Jake Moreland made a plethora of huge saves to keep Victoria of the board. After two periods it was 4-0 Fresno.
The Kings continued to apply pressure in the third and were rewarded when Ash Goldie notched a power play goal less than six minutes into the third period. Jordan Krestanovich added a second power play marker to make it 4-2, but the Salmon Kings would get no closer. Fresno added a late goal and skated to a 5-2 win.
Victoria went 2-8 12.5% and Fresno was 2-5 40% on the power play. Victoria outshot Fresno 46-21.
The Salmon Kings continue their three games in three night tour of California tour tomorrow night in Bakersfield. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The team then returns to Fresno for a 3 p.m. game on Sunday afternoon. Victoria returns to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on December 19th to take on last year's playoff opponent the Alaska Aces. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
